Beatrice Hignutt Sammons

Sammons, 80 SEAFORD - Beatrice Hignutt Sammons, 80, of Seaford, Delaware, passed away Monday, September 30, 2013, after a short illness. She was born September 6, 1933 in Greenwood, Delaware. Beatrice was a lifelong resident of Sussex County. She was valedictorian of her Greenwood High School class; magna cum laude graduate of the University of Delaware; and magna cum laude graduate of Salisbury State University. She was named Teacher-of-The-Year at Evelyn I Morris Elementary School for the Milford School District in 1973-74, retiring in 1994 after 27 years. Beatrice was a parishioner of the Bethany Church of the Brethren in Farmington, and for many years a member of The American Association of University Women. A lifelong educator and learner, Beatrice loved to travel and was an avid reader. She leaves behind numerous friends and family members whose lives were greatly enriched by her kindness and generosity. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard D. Sammons. Also surviving are her children, Linda S. Sheehan (William) of Pinehurst, N.C., Donna S. Saunders (C. Daniel) of Chestertown, Md.; and one granddaughter, Danielle B. Sheehan, of Greensboro, N.C.; one step-granddaughter, Kristin Saunders of Annapolis, Md.; and step-great grandson, Elvis Evans. Memorial services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at the Bethany Church of the Brethren, Farmington, Del. A private burial service for the immediate family will be held at a later date. In-lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bethany Church of the Brethren, 91 School St., Farmington, DE, 19950. Arrangements handled by Short Funeral Services, Milton.
