Barbara Ann Mitchell Wharton

Mitchell Wharton, 84 MILLSBORO - Barbara Ann Mitchell Wharton, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012. She was born on Nov. 20, 1927 to the late Henry B. and Florence H. Mitchell. Barbara was a graduate of Linden Hall and the University of Delaware where she continued to attend football games until 2011. Mrs. Wharton was a physical education teacher before becoming the loving wife of George A. Wharton in 1950. She was a homemaker and devoted mother to her three children. A lifelong member and servant of Grace United Methodist church in Millsboro, Barbara taught Sunday school, served as past President and Treasurer of the United Methodist Women, was a member of multiple committees and boards, and sang in the choir until this past spring. She was involved in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. She loved sport events, attending most if not all of her children's and grandchildren's games. She enjoyed playing bridge, entertaining, especially at her 4th of July celebrations, and helping others. Preceded in death by her husband of thirty-six years, George A. Wharton; and her granddaughter, Lynn A. Corson. Mrs. Wharton is survived by her three children and their spouses, David W. and Lisa C. Wharton, Ann W. and Bruce E. Corson and Beth W. and Stephen J. Kern; six grandchildren, Abigail D. Wharton, Karen J. Corson, Benjamin D. and Taylor J. Kern, Susannah L. and J. Stuart Griffin; two great-grandsons, John D. Van der Hoef and Max R. Griffin; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles H. and Cecilia K. Mitchell; a niece and nephews, Linda A., C.W., and John B. Mitchell and their families. A church service will be held Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Mariner's Bethel U.M. Cemetery in Ocean View. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace U.M. Church, PO Box 566, Millsboro, DE. 19966.
