Athlete of the Week: Yamir Knight, Smyrna football

Posted

Smyrna High football player Yamir Knight was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.

The running back/receiver scored 20 points in the Eagles’ 22-0 win over Sussex Central on Friday. Knight ran for two touchdowns, caught a TD pass and scored a two-point conversion in the Class 3A, District II showdown.

Knight ran 11 times for 70 yards while adding four receptions for 37 more yards.

For the season, Knight has 19 catches for 202 yards and four TDs along with 195 yards and three TDs on 45 carries. An All-Class 3A receiver, Knight is verbally committed to James Madison.

“Yamir is a reliable leader who continues to find ways to make his teammates better day after day,” said Smyrna coach Mike Judy. “He is a guy whose ego is never too big to do what is necessary — he does a little of everything and anything to help put us in a position to win. He is one of the most dynamic athletes we have coached.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Friday.
