Milford High wrestler Trevor Copes was voted the State News Athlete of the Week. The freshman won the 120-pound title at the Milford Invitational tournament on Saturday.
Copes, who competed on the Buccaneers’ varsity as an eighth-grader last winter, won all three of his matches by second-period pin to top the bracket. After reaching the state finals as an eighth-grader, he has a 7-0 record with a pair of tourney titles so far this season.
“Trevor’s wrestling IQ is exceptional and the sky is the limit to what he can achieve,” said Milford coach Don Parsley. “I’m looking forward to a great season and career.”
The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.
All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Friday.
