Sussex Central High swimmer Breyden Wright was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week after making it on the podium twice at the DIAA boys’ state finals on Saturday.
The junior, who was named the boys’ Outstanding Swimmer at the Henlopen Conference meet two weeks ago, finished second in the 100-Yard Butterfly (50.05) and third in the 100-Yard Backstroke (52.72).
Wright’s strong showing comes after he placed second in both events last season. His time in the backstroke was almost a second faster than his previous personal best.
“Breyden is a rare type of athlete whose competitiveness is equally matched by his work ethic,” said Golden Knights’ coach Jeffrey Kilner. “Between the hours he puts in with his club team (BST and coach Scott McIntyre) and our team at SCHS, he makes the absolute most of every opportunity to improve.
“Brey carries the same work ethic into the classroom, and is a prime example of a student athlete. He truly represents the SCHS motto of ‘success with class,’ and we’re excited to see what his senior season brings.”
The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
