Athlete of the Week: Ryan Woodzell, Caesar Rodney swimming

Posted

Caesar Rodney High swimmer Ryan Woodzell was voted the State News Athlete of the Week.

The senior posted four individual victories and was part of three winning relays as the Riders picked up a win and a tie last week. Woodzell currently holds three school records: 1:44.70 in the 200 freestyle, 2:04.55 in the 200 Individual Medley and 4:45.51 in the 500 freestyle.

A past winner of the Outstanding Swimmer award at the Henlopen Conference meet, Woodzell recently signed with Fairfield University.

“Ryan is an outstanding athlete, student, and teammate,” said CR coach Kyle Williamson. “He brings an amazing attitude to the pool deck, always boosting his teammates, swimming hard, and still having fun. Ryan is our top 500 swimmer, which is the longest and most grueling high school race, and last year he placed second overall in the state.

“I don’t know how he manages to swim like that and still always be so positive, but I love that he sets that example for other swimmers to learn from.”

“Ryan’s name has become synonymous with greatness in swimming on our team,” said the Riders’ other co-head coach, Noelle Mouhtarim. “He is someone that newer swimmers aspire to be like both as an athlete and as a human being.”
