Dover High volleyball player Olivia Anyanwu was voted this week’s Athlete of the Week. The senior setter was credited with 69 assists as the Senators out-dueled Smyrna, 3-2, to capture their first Henlopen North title since 2006.
A state champion tennis player, Anyanwu also recorded her 1,000th career assist in a victory over Lake Forest. In two matches, Anyanwu collected 123 assists, six kills, five aces and 11 digs.
Anyanwu and the Senators face Southern Division champion Lake Forest again in the Henlopen Conference championship match on Saturday. The match is slated for noon at Woodbridge High.
“I can’t say enough about Olivia,” said Dover coach Eric Riehl. “She is technically the glue for these girls. Off the court, she is a genuine friend to all of them and, on the court, they fight for her because they love her.
“She’s not happy with herself until she can run a play flawlessly and won’t stop trying until she does so. Olivia is the definition of an athlete and I am proud and grateful as her coach to have shared this moment in time with her.”
