Athlete of the Week: J.W. Warner, Delmar High football

Posted

Delmar High football player J.W. Warner was voted the State News’ Athlete of the Week. The senior running back ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries in the Wildcats’ 36-12 win over Lake Forest last Friday.

Warner’s 54-yard scoring run at the end of the first half helped put Delmar in control. A first-team All-Henlopen South pick last fall, he has run for over 800 yards in a little over seven games.

“He had a spectacular game,” Delmar coach Dave Hearn said about Warner’s effort against Lake. “He had several big runs. The timing of them and the way he does things with speed can be devastating. Those 50, 60-yarders are hard to swallow.

“He’s not just a flash in the pan. He’s been one of our best players for the last two years. He plays both sides of the ball and he’s on special teams so he’s an all-rounder. He’s an inspiration to the rest of the kids. They look to him as a leader and we count on him for all those roles.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
