Athlete of the Week: Jada Evans, Seaford High softball

Posted

Seaford High softball player Jada Evans was voted this week’s Delaware State News’ Athlete of the Week. The senior pitcher led the Blue Jays to a 2-1 week.

In a win over Dover, Evans pitched a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks while also going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Against Laurel, Evans hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give Seaford the lead. And in a 2-1 loss to Caravel, she pitched a five-hitter with only the two runs allowed.

Despite dealing with a sprained ankle, Evans has a 1.30 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 27 innings this season. Offensively she’s batting .444.

Evans is headed for Hampton University on a softball scholarship in the fall.

“Jada is a true leader on and off the field,” said Seaford coach Shana Riggleman Phelps. “She has been playing through her first injury and has really stepped up. I have watched her really grow into a leader on the field. I am looking forward to watching the rest of her senior season.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print each Friday.
