Lake Forest High basketball player Gabrielle Almonte was voted this week’s Athlete of the Week. The senior scored a total of 40 points in two more victories for the Spartans, including 24 points in a 47-30 Henlopen South win over Seaford.
A good student in the classroom, Lake Forest coach Coleman Morris thinks the 5-foot-11 Almonte has college potential. A versatile player who can play either inside or outside, Almonte is averaging 19 points and nine rebounds per game.
But, more importantly said Morris, she makes her teammates better.
“Early on, she was scoring a lot of points,” said Morris. “But it’s really because of her that the other girls have developed and we’ve started getting two or three other girls up near double digits. That’s just because of her unselfishness and her willingness to be a team player, be a leader on the floor and create for others.
“I think what’s most important for her is that she’s not caught up in scoring all the points. She’s about what’s doing what’s best for her teammates.”
