Cape Henlopen High wrestler Mikey Frederick was voted this week’s Athlete of the Week. The senior won three state tournament matches by tech fall as the Vikings captured the DIAA Division I dual-meet state championship.

Frederick wrestled two matches at 145 pounds before moving up to 152 in the finals, also recording the 100th victory of his career. He is 29-5 this season with 12 pins while posting a career record of 100-45 with 43 pins.

A four-year varsity letterman, Frederick has twice placed third in the state tournament. A top student, he is planning to play lacrosse at Mercer College.

“Mikey Frederick is a hard-working young man who has a strong desire to succeed,” said Cape Henlopen coach Chris Mattioni. “He has been a wrestling team captain since his sophomore year. He has natural leadership abilities, always leads by example and encourages others to push themselves.

“He sets the tone in the practice room and at dual meets and tournaments. He wrestles with intensity.”
