Posted

Smyrna High football player Brian Wright was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.

The senior quarterback completed 16-of-24 passes for 226 yards as the Eagles beat Dover, 52-7, for the DIAA Class 3A state title. The senior quarterback threw a pair of touchdown passes with no interceptions.

In his first year as a starter, Wright got better as the season went along. For the season, he completed 162-of-267 passes for 2,209 yards with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Wright earned second-team All-Class 3A honors.

“Brian really showed how hard work and a willingness to keep the main thing (progress) the main thing,” said Smyrna coach Mike Judy. “A 4.12 GPA student in the classroom he was a quick learner and kept his focus all year. He is a shining example of a never-quit attitude.”
