Athlete of the Week: Baylie Phillips, Delmar field hockey

Delmar High field hockey player Baylie Phillips was voted the State News Athlete of the Week.

A junior midfielder, Phillips scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Wildcats edged Cape Henlopen, 3-2, in the Henlopen Conference championship game.

For the season, Phillips has tallied eight goals and four assists for Delmar, which goes into the DIAA Division II state tournament as the top seed and riding a 111-game winning streak.

“Bailey plays left mid and is a consistent player for us,” said Wildcats’ coach Jodi Hollamon. “She is a quiet leader that works hard every single day. Her role in stepping up last Saturday was the key to our win.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
