Tennessee's prisons chief is resigning after failed execution of Christa Pike
SUMMARY: The head of Tennessee’s prison system is resigning after the failed execution of Christa Pike. The announcement was made by Gov. Bill Lee on Saturday. Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada said in a statement that stepping aside “is in the best interests” of the state as an independent review is carried out to determine why Pike’s execution failed Wednesday. Pike was placed on a ventilator and remained unconscious in a hospital, her attorneys said in a court filing Friday. Hospital staff, her lawyers said, were working to save Pike’s life and as of late Thursday were trying to clear the two doses of the drug that the state uses to execute prisoners.

What to know about the investigation into Cornell University gang rape allegations
SUMMARY: Intense public outcry over a woman’s account of being gang-raped at Cornell University has prompted New York’s governor to angrily yank control of the investigation away from the local prosecutor who didn’t initially see what happened as a crime. Now, the task of unraveling the case will fall to New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was appointed as a special prosecutor this week. James is a Democrat best known for tangling with President Donald Trump. She suggested at a news conference Friday that her investigation wouldn’t be rushed. She described it as a monthslong process, with no predetermined outcome.

FACT FOCUS: What people are alleging in a Cornell University fraternity gang rape case
SUMMARY: Allegations that a group of men gang raped a Cornell University student at a fraternity house in 2024 have drawn online speculation about what the school and authorities did and criticism that no charges were filed. Some of the speculation is misleading or inaccurate, but some has been true, including that a prosecutor initially closed the case without speaking to the woman. The state attorney general was appointed special prosecutor in the case. It was reopened after the woman filed a lawsuit last month against seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity, the university and others. Several of the men have denied any nonconsensual sex or denied they touched the woman.

Woman told Cornell investigators she 'felt like bait' during alleged gang rape
SUMMARY: A woman who says she was gang-raped at Cornell University testified at a campus hearing that she “felt like bait” as the attackers were “like lions around me.” This is according to newly released records from the school’s disciplinary investigation. Details of the alleged attack first emerged from a lawsuit filed by the woman, identified only as Jane Doe. Heavily redacted Title IX documents show conflicting reports of what happened at the Chi Phi fraternity party in October 2024. The documents are part of a separate lawsuit involving one of the accused men looking to overturn his punishment.

Former GOP Rep. David Rivera sentenced to 10 years for secret Venezuela lobbying
SUMMARY: A former Miami congressman has been sentenced to ten years in prison for a secret $50 million lobbying campaign for Venezuela during President Donald Trump’s first term. Republican David Rivera, a longtime friend of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has been jailed since being found guilty in May of failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The details of his work for Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuelan government that came out during the trial highlighted Miami’s role as a hub for foreign influence campaigns targeting U.S. policy toward Latin America. Rubio testified that he had no idea it was going on and that he felt betrayed.

Police bodycam footage of Luigi Mangione’s arrest released
SUMMARY: Police bodycam footage shows officers arresting Luigi Mangione at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s in connection with the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The footage that was released Friday captures officers identifying Mangione and finding a gun cartridge in his belongings. Mangione was arrested on Dec. 9, 2024, five days after Thompson was killed in Manhattan. A judge unsealed the recordings after CNN petitioned for their release. Prosecutors probing deaths of 2 Ole Miss students charge shop clerk, son with selling illegal kratom
SUMMARY: Federal authorities investigating the deaths of two University of Mississippi students have charged a store clerk and his son with selling an illegal kratom product. A drug task force in Mississippi had previously urged people to avoid kratom after authorities found packages of kratom derivatives while investigating the two deaths. Kratom is an herbal substance that acts as a stimulant at low doses and a sedative at high doses. It is still not clear whether kratom contributed to either death, but federal prosecutors said both deaths appear consistent with drug overdoses. Bank records show one of the students made purchases at the store where the clerk and his son worked.

Trump makes rare presidential visit to tribal land for rally
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump's campaign rally on the Choctaw Nation puts him in rare company. He's among a handful of presidents who have visited Native American reservations while in office. Trump's greeted Choctaw Principal Chief Gary Batton at the rally Thursday in Durant, Oklahoma, and thanked the tribe. Tribal delegations have been meeting with presidents in Washington since the Early Republic. The purpose and tone of those visits have changed dramatically as the relationship between the U.S. and tribal nations has evolved. Early visits promoted assimilating Natives into white society, while more recent visits promoted the tribes' inherent right to govern themselves.

Many states have backup execution plans, but failures still happen
SUMMARY: Most states have backup plans in case the first attempt at executing someone is unsuccessful. But when the state of Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike on Wednesday night, the backup plan also failed, leaving Pike in critical condition at a hospital. The nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center, a clearinghouse for information on U.S. executions, notes that states vary in their execution protocols and transparency. Pike's case highlights ongoing debates about execution methods and public transparency.

What to know about Christa Pike and her failed lethal injection execution attempt in Tennessee
SUMMARY: Attorneys say Tennessee failed to execute Christa Pike despite administering two doses of a lethal drug in the state’s death chamber, leaving her on a ventilator and unconscious in a hospital in the following hours. The court filing offers the first detailed account of Pike’s condition after an ambulance carried her away Wednesday night. Her attorneys said a day earlier that she was in critical condition. Witnesses say Pike was still breathing and making snoring noises for over an hour after the execution started. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has ordered an independent investigation into the incident. Pike's lawyers argue her medical conditions made the execution method torturous and are calling for her sentence to be commuted.

Iowa’s governor signs bill increasing tax incentive cap for a $15B steel plant
SUMMARY: Iowa’s governor has signed a bill to expand the ceiling on the state's tax incentives. Officials say the change is needed to secure a $15 billion steel plant project for the state because the company wouldn't accept what's currently in law. President Donald Trump announced the plant on Monday. He called it a major economic and national security investment. The project is planned for Iowa's southeast corner, but the exact location is undisclosed. State officials say Iowa needed to modify its economic development program to compete for the project. While the plant promises jobs and growth, experts say it also presents risks to the local rural communities.

Voters favor Democrats on key issues but lack faith in either party to solve problems: AP-NORC poll
SUMMARY: An AP-NORC poll finds that voters are deeply dissatisfied with President Donald Trump and his Republican Party heading into the Nov. 3 elections. The Democratic Party has built an advantage on pressing issues such as the cost of living and healthcare. But the survey also points to a bigger problem for both political parties. It finds that few registered voters think either Republicans or Democrats are able to solve important problems or help Americans like them. That undercurrent of cynicism about either party’s ability to change things will be a challenge for both the Democrats and the Republicans, no matter which party controls Congress.

A gut punch in Ohio: Nearly 1,400 laid off at truck factory just days before Trump rally
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is trying to rally voters in the Dayton, Ohio, area on Saturday. But days ago, 1,400 workers were laid off from a truck factory there. The November midterms are a test for the working-class coalition that lifted Trump into the White House and gave Republicans control of Congress. The outcome will be decided in places like Dayton. It lost factories to Mexico, though has been on the rebound recently. But voters are concerned about the high cost of living and say Trump's policies aren't helping them. Trump has scoffed at concerns about affordability, and has said the only thing hurting his party is bad public relations.

Trump stumps for candidates in deep red Alabama and says he'll be back again next week
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump continued his midterm campaign swing with a rally in deep red Alabama Friday, returning to the place where he drew his first mega crowd but is hardly considered a top midterm battleground. With just weeks to go before elections that will determine control of Congress, Trump urged his supporters to back Republicans including Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for Alabama governor, and state Rep. Rhett Marques, who is seeking to flip Alabama’s newly redrawn 2nd Congressional District.
