BKN--NBA FINALS-SPURS-WEMBANYAMA
Wembanyama scores 26 but struggles from field in NBA Finals debut as Spurs fall to Knicks in Game 1
SUMMARY: Victor Wembanyama got blessed by nuns before the game, got the loudest ovation when the starters were announced, pumped his fist to the crowd a few times and generally seemed to enjoy his first taste of the NBA Finals. Until the ending. The French star had 26 points in his finals debut, though had to work for all of them. The worst part of all for Wembanyama, the best defensive player in the game, was seeing the Knicks score the game’s final 11 points and stealing away home-court advantage with a 105-95 victory.

Josh Hart helps Knicks turn around Game 1 of the NBA Finals
SUMMARY: When the New York Knicks needed a lift, they turned to the player who has given them everything he has all season. Josh Hart overcame early foul trouble to lead a defensive effort that stymied the San Antonio Spurs in the second half as New York rallied for a 105-95 victory in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday.

BKN--NBA FINALS-KNICKS BRUNSON
Brunson clutch again as Knicks top Spurs in Game 1 of NBA Finals
Jalen Brunson gave the New York Knicks a huge scare in the first quarter, limping off and leaving the floor to deal with what appeared to be some sort of knee and ankle issues. He wasn’t gone for long. And by the fourth quarter, all that was forgotten. Brunson won the NBA’s clutch player award in 2025, and in case anyone forgot why, he provided a series of reminders in a scintillating final 7 1/2 minutes that helped the Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 of the NBA finals.

Jalen Brunson scores 30 and Knicks finish on 11-0 run, steal Game 1 from Spurs with 105-95 win
SUMMARY: The New York Knicks’ winning streak lives on, and they struck first in the NBA Finals. Jalen Brunson scored 30 points, Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and the Knicks erased a 14-point second-half deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 of the finals on Wednesday night. OG Anunoby had 17 points for New York — which has won 12 consecutive playoff games, the sventh team to have such a streak in NBA history. Victor Wembanyama had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs, but he shot 6 for 21 from the field in his finals debut.

BBO--PHILLIES-SÁNCHEZ
Phillies ace Sánchez’s scoreless streak ends at 50 2/3 innings, 3rd-longest in more than a century
SUMMARY: Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez extended his consecutive shutout innings streak to 50 2/3 before allowing a two-out RBI single to San Diego’s Jackson Merrill in the seventh Wednesday night. Sánchez’s streak is the third-best overall dating to the start of the Live Ball Era in 1920 behind the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser’s 59 scoreless innings in 1988, and Don Drysdale’s 58 in 1968. He struck out San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and set the Padres down in order in the first to pass Carl Hubbell and become the career leader among left-handers. Sánchez breezed through six scoreless innings before allowing a two-out double in the seventh to Ty France, and Merrill followed with a hit that accounted for the only run allowed by Sánchez since the end of April.

The school has fought lawsuits in federal court since 2018 brought by former student athletes against the university over its failure to stop abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss. Strauss worked at the school from 1978 to 1998 and died in 2005. BBO--MANFRED
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred worries cap proposal could lead to repeat of 1994-95 strike
SUMMARY: Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred worries the owners’ salary cap proposal could lead to a work stoppage like the one that canceled the 1994 World Series. Owners last week made their first cap proposal since then, citing the failure of the luxury tax system. Manfred says the current system isn’t working and emphasized the need for a framework to address competitive balance. Players have vowed to fight the cap. The current collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 1, and management is expected to impose a lockout. MLB would limit spending in 2027 and establish a payroll floor to force some teams to spend more.

The New York Post, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that Garden officials have “performed security walkthroughs” in anticipation of a Trump visit.

Nelly Korda charges into U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera with hunger stoked by last year’s setbacks
SUMMARY: Nelly Korda fell just short of her first U.S. Women’s Open title a year ago. She came up second to Maja Stark in a finish that was painfully appropriate for her inexplicably winless calendar year. But that disappointment at Erin Hills is a primary reason Korda arrived at venerable Riviera this week as the world’s No. 1 player and a favorite to raise the trophy at the 81st Open. Korda has been outstanding this season, winning three titles and a major and adding three second-place finishes on her way back to the stop of the rankings.

The leaders committee held the hearing as they push legislation that they hope can break the congressional gridlock over how to regulate college athletics. But the SEC and the Big Ten oppose the bill and said it “leaves critical issues unresolved.” GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno also said he had “grave concerns” about the legislation.
