FBN--BEHIND THE CALL

Season of the kicker unravels with missed field goal sending Ravens home and Steelers to playoffs

SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Steelers narrowly defeated the Baltimore Ravens after a dramatic ending on Sunday night. Steelers kicker Chris Boswell missed an extra point, leaving the Steelers with a slim 26-24 lead. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson then set up rookie kicker Tyler Loop for a potential game-winning 44-yard field goal. Loop missed the kick, pushing it to the right. Ravens coach John Harbaugh defended the decision to attempt the kick from that distance. The game highlighted the increasing accuracy and expectations for NFL kickers, who have been making longer field goals more frequently.

FBN--NFL-PLAYOFF-GUIDE

SUMMARY: This year’s NFL playoffs could represent a shift to a new generation of winning players — particularly at quarterback. The top two seeds in both the AFC and NFC are led by a quartet of young or unheralded quarterbacks, including Bo Nix, Drake Maye, Sam Darnold and Caleb Williams. All while perennial MVP candidates like Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson are sitting at home. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some familiar postseason faces taking snaps in the coming weeks. Veterans like Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers, Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts and the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford are back in the postseason, vying for a spot in Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara, California, on Feb. 8.

Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr. are gone from the Commanders after a 5-12 season, AP source says

SUMMARY: A team official with knowledge of the moves says coordinators Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr. are both gone from head coach Dan Quinn’s staff with the Washington Commanders after a 5-12 season. Kingsbury, the offensive coordinator, and Whitt, who had been in charge of the defense until being stripped of play-calling duties during the season, both arrived in Washington with Quinn before the 2024 season. Quinn and Kingsbury mutually agreed to part ways, according to the person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the staff changes hadn’t been announced. Whitt was dismissed, which was not surprising given his earlier demotion.

No. 6 seed Ole Miss, No. 10 Miami set up College Football Playoff game like no other

SUMMARY: The Fiesta Bowl will be a College Football Playoff game like no other. Either No. 6 seed Mississippi or No. 10 Miami will play in the national championship game following a battle of teams left out of the CFP a year ago. The Hurricanes have rekindled some of the magic of their last championship in 2001 behind a stifling defense and steady quarterback Carson Beck. The Rebels have kept winning despite coach Lane Kiffin bolting for LSU. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has been superb since taking over as the starter in the third game of the season.

It’s the second consecutive season in which Eberflus has been fired. He was let go midseason in 2024, his third year as coach of the Chicago Bears. Eberflus made it to the end of the season in his return to Dallas, where he had been an assistant from 2011-17 before going to Indianapolis as defensive coordinator. But the 55-year-old’s fate appeared sealed before Sunday’s finale. Dallas’ 34-17 loss at the New York Giants set a club record as the ninth game of allowing at least 30 points.

SUMMARY: Scottie Scheffler goes for the career Grand Slam. Brooks Koepka is searching for a new path now that he’s no longer with Saudi-backed LIV Golf. And the annual question in golf always seems to go back to the future of Tiger Woods. These are among six pressing topics for golf going into 2026. The season is starting a week late because The Sentry at Kapalua was canceled because of water issues. It’s only fitting that on what would have been the start of the first week of the PGA Tour, Maui was under a flood watch.
