Annabel Lee 'Alice' Bartlett
VERO BEACH, Fla. - Annabel Lee Collins Bartlett, known as "Alice," passed away on Dec. 25, 2006, at the home of her only child, Joani Tilghman Bartlett Becker in Vero Beach, just a month shy of her 88th birthday.
She was born on Jan. 26, 1919, in Reids Grove to Alice Lynwood Tilghman Collins and Joseph Graham Collins.
A graduate of Cambridge High School's Class of 1935, Alice worked for Stephen Smith Clothier before going on to serve as a secretary to Senator Davis of Maryland.
In 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, Roland William Bartlett of Wilmington, Del. It was in September 1943, while her husband was fighting in Europe with Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army, that Alice gave birth to her daughter.
Alice was fond of dancing, books, animals and travel. She was locally known to fellow Cambridge residents for her hand crocheted doll clothing, her skilled stenographic services and her support of both the Humane Society of Dorchester County and the Dorchester Arts Society.
She is survived by the extensive family of her daughter, five granddaughters and their respective families - Trish Becker of New York, Landis Tilghman Becker and her daughter, Caitlin Reardon of Weston, Mass., Kathleen Collins Becker and her husband, Miles Kunkel of Boulder, Colo., Karen and Ted Casey and their children, Owen and Carolyn Tilghman Casey of New York and Lillian "Elle" Becker of Washington, D.C.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at East New Market Cemetery. The Rev. Delmer Willey will officiate.
The family will gather after the service at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Matthews, 209 Belvedere Ave., in Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Bartlett to the Humane Society of Dorchester County, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
