MILLVILLE, N.J. - Ann Hansen Stokes, (aka Mrs. Hughey, Mrs. Wharmby, Annie, Banana, Mama, Mom, and Grammy) was the guiding light in the lives of many. Her warmth, compassion, and inexhaustible capacity to love and care for the people in her life were her gifts to the world. She was a wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, friend, devoted member of the Christian Science Church, and a former school teacher to many students and will be sorely missed by all. She was born Elizabeth Ann Hansen on July 24th, 1940, in Trenton, N.J. to Thomas and Elizabeth Hansen. She grew up on a farm in Bridgeville, Delaware, an only child who routinely lost herself in books. She graduated from University of Delaware in 1962 and went on to earn a Master's degree in Reading from Rutgers University. Ann was a reading teacher at both Lewes and Milton schools. Her positive outlook and genuine care for her students inspired many to count her as one of the most influential people in their lives. She was also a business owner, having founded Annie's Original Desserts in Lewes, DE on her back porch, eventually growing into a stand alone bakery. Her desserts, particularly the famous cheesecake that started it all, were featured in many area restaurants from Ocean City, Maryland to Philadelphia, Pa. Her recipes were also the foundation for some of the tastiest and most beautiful wedding cakes ever served. Mrs. Stokes died on Aug. 26, 2012 at her son's home in Millville, N.J., after an 18-month battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Peter Stokes; their dog Brodie; and her two sons, Scott Hughey and his wife Jill, Mark Hughey and his wife Kelly; and the grandchildren she adored. A memorial service and luncheon will be held in the banquet room of Irish Eyes Restaurant, 213 Anglers Road, Lewes, DE on Sept. 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. There will be no viewing or graveside service. A memorial website, where friends and family can post pictures and stories of Ann's life, can be viewed at
