Ambulance involved in Rehoboth fender-bender

REHOBOTH BEACH — Delaware State Police are investigating an accident involving a Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department ambulance.

At about 10 a.m. on Saturday, a Ford F-150 towing a small utility trailer collided with the ambulance as it was transporting a 78-year-old female with non-life-threatening injuries to an area hospital, police said.

The 2014 International Horton Ambulance, operated by a 24-year-old female Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Department employee, was traveling eastbound on Old Landing Road approaching Del. 1 with its lights and sirens on, police said.

As the ambulance crossed over the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway, the front of the Ford F-150 struck the front left of the ambulance within the intersection, police said.

The ambulance’s driver was transported to the hospital where she was later released with minor injuries.

The 78-year-old patient, who had no life-threatening injuries, was transported to an area hospital by a different ambulance, police said.

The pickup truck’s 62-year-old male driver and the 36-year-old female emergency medical technician who was treating the 78-year-old both refused medical treatment on the scene.

The collision remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
