Laurel - Albert "Steelie" Jones of West 6th Street in Laurel, died Friday, April 25, 2014 at Lofland Park Center in Seaford, DE. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late Fred and Elizabeth (Dean) Jones. He was a 1947 graduate of Shenley High School in Pittsburgh. Upon graduation, he matriculated to the former Maryland State College, now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, MD receiving a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his education and received a Master's degree in Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Jones career as an educator spanned 40 years. In 1953 he became a science teacher at Washington High School in Princess Anne, MD. He also taught Physics at the former William C. Jason High School in Georgetown, DE and Seaford High School. He retired in 1995 as a college counselor at Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown. His civic and community involvement included member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Psi Iota Chapter; former City Councilman for the town of Laurel, former board member of the Star Newspaper, former member of Somerset County Teachers Assoc., Sussex County Teachers Assoc, NEA, and a national association of college counselors. He was inducted in the U.M.E.S. Football Hall of Fame. He was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church in Laurel where he served as a Trustee, former president of the Pastor Parish Committee and United Methodist Men. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hattie "Betty" Jones of Laurel; two children: Jeffrey (Rachel) Jones and Bertina Jones, all of Raleigh, NC; one granddaughter: Rachel Jones of Dallas, TX; one sister: Vietta Fisher of Pittsburgh, PA, one sister-in-law: Doris Wheeler of New Rochelle, NY and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 3, 2014 at New Zion U.M. Church where friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, one hour prior to service.
