Al Mellen

LINCOLN - Al Mellen, of Lincoln, Delaware, passed away on February 24, 2014 at the age of 85. He was born on January 19, 1929 in Lansing, Michigan. He was the son of Al and Sarah Mellen. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the Lansing Fire Dept. after 25 years of service. After retirement, Al and Shirley moved to Virginia, followed by Pennsylvania until they settled in Delaware. Al was a "Jack of All Trades" and always assisted others with automotive, electrical, plumbing and building projects. In past years, Al had a passion for outdoor activities, boating (sailing) and flying his powered parachute. In more recent years Al enjoyed his computer, the company of family and friends along with a love for animals, especially his cat - Green Eyes. Survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Shirley (Anderson) Mellen; son, Jerry (Pam) of Aston, Pa.; daughter, Sherri (Catherine) of New Brunswick, N.J.; granddaughters, Kimberly Schukraft (Steve) of Media, Pa., and Stacey Mellen of Aston, Pa.; and great granddaughter, Abigail Schukraft. Services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Ministry of comfort by McPherson Funeral Service, Inc., Seaford.
