DOVER - 'Ada' Hancock died peacefully on Jan. 26, 2013 at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville S.C. after a brief illness. She had just moved to Bluffton S.C. in Dec. and was residing at the National Health Care Center Bluffton S.C. where she was close to her daughter, Jean. She was born in Wyoming Del. July 25, 1939 and was the daughter of Joshua and Adabelle Short. She was one of seven children who all preceded her in death. (Edna Roe, Catherine Jarrell, Houston, Rodney, Chester and Calvin Short). She graduated from Caesar Rodney High School where she excelled and loved playing basketball. She then attended Goldy College in Wilmington for a year prior to its closing. She returned to Dover and worked for the Telegraph Office for five years. After her children were in school she returned to work and worked for the State Board of Health for twenty seven years. She treasured her relationships with family and friends and relished the time she spent with them. She also loved to bowl (bowled in two leagues and a travel league up until she was 92. She liked to travel and her favorite place was Kitty Hawk NC where she and Cariss fished for two weeks each year. She was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover DE where she attended up until the last couple of years. She was predeceased by her husband H. Cariss Hancock; as well as her son-in-law, Bill Cain; and sister-in law H. Elizabeth Hancock. She is survived by two daughters, Ann Cain of Felton, Del. and Jean (Bill) Horan of Bluffton, S.C.; two grandchildren, Sue Burchett (Joe) and Duane Harrell (Kelley) both of Harrington Del.; four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Yost and Hannah and Rachael Harrell; two great great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces; nephews; as well as step grandchildren; step great and great-great grandchildren; and her best friend Ralph Gmuer. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday Feb. 5, 2013 at 11 a.m at Torbert Funeral Chapel South 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover De. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer Foundation, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 or the Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934.
