SNOW HILL, Md. - William Martin "Marty" Atkins, III died Monday, May 9, 2022 at his home.
Born in Crisfield on October 10, 1947, he was a son of the late William Martin Atkins, Jr. and Marilyn Reese Atkins.
A marine biologist, he graduated from Crisfield High School class of 1965 and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Over the years he worked for Tyson Foods, Barcroft, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, and Sanofi-Aventis US LLC. Prior to his official retirement he drove a bus to assist disabled people in getting to work. He always stated that this was his most rewarding job- seeing how happy these people were to go to work each day.
Marty was also a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran, serving from March 17, 1966 until March 16, 1970. Sergeant Atkins awards included the NATDEFSM, Combat Action Ribbon, Viet Nam Combat Medal w/device, Good Conduct Medal, and the Viet Nam Service Medal.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marion Station in his younger years, and the Elks. He loved fishing, reading, history, train collections, and watching rocket launches at Wallops. He was also an avid Baltimore Orioles, Shorebirds, and Chicago Bears fan.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John "Jeb" and Rebecca Atkins of Hanover, Pa., and Joshua and Casey Atkins of Lincoln, Del.; five grandchildren, Abigail Atkins and Olivia Atkins of Hanover, and Hadden Annand, Kylie Atkins and Avery Atkins of Lincoln; his brothers and sisters, Mark Atkins (Maron), Linda Wilmer (Ken), Mike Atkins, and Lisa Kraus (Bill); and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private memorial service with Military Honors was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Father Mike Lokey officiated.
