CAMBRIDGE - W. Roger Beckwith, 80, passed away on Monday July 23, 2007, at the Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born in Easton on April 28, 1927, and was a son of the late William Paul and Myrtle Williams Beckwith.
Mr. Beckwith attended Hurlock Elementary School and graduated from Hurlock High School in 1944. He then attended Salisbury State College for one year and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. While in the Army he served in Germany and Austria.
On March 11, 1949, he was married to the former Sara Marine. After his military service he returned to Salisbury State College where he graduated in 1950.
Mr. Beckwith was an educator in Caroline County and Dorchester County for 29 years and was principal at several Dorchester County schools. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where he had taught Sunday School for a number of years.
He was a member of Choptank Post 7460 Veterans of Foreign Wars and he enjoyed sports, especially playing tennis. Mr. Beckwith had been in failing health for several years and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital since Saturday morning.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sara M. Beckwith of Cambridge; two daughters, Sherry B. McGrath of Linkwood and Phyllis A. Barbour and her husband, Rex Barbour of Annapolis; four grandchildren, Christi Stokes, Courtney McGrath, Jenna Barbour and Brent Barbour; one great-grandson, Cody Collins and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Samuel H. McWilliams and the Rev. Kevin E. English officiating. Burial will follow at the Unity-Washington Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
Pallbearers will be Al Daniel, Rex Barbour, Brent Barbour, Ricky Dukes, Ricky Dukes Jr. and Brian Dukes.
