EWELL — Volunteers will be on Smith Island on Tuesday, June 13 to create a pocket park across from the Recreation Center on the corner of Smith Island Road and Tyler Road. This is the new date and time as the event has been postponed previously due to rain.

The Coastal Association of Realtors (CAR) in partnership with the Maryland Department of Planning is utilizing a $5,000 Placemaking grant from the National Association of Realtors to set-up picnic tables, benches, a bike rack, information kiosk and provide some landscaping.

Smith Island United is covering boat fare for those leaving from Crisfield at 8 a.m., with the return at 2:30. Lunch will be available for purchase to include crab cake sandwich, side for $14.99 with Smith Island cake $3.99 extra, plus recommended 15 percent tip.

The itinerary is: Meet at Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield at the school boat Chelsea Lane Tyler at 7:45. Once in Ewell volunteers will walk to the site and start work around 9. Construction is anticipated to be completed by 11:30. There will be free time after that with lunch at Bayside Inn starting at noon.

The boat will leave promptly at 1:30 and arrive in Crisfield at 2:30. Participants may want to bring water, bug spray and sunblock, work gloves, etc.

The property is owned by the Ewell Volunteer Fire Company and Recreation Center Inc. CAR is contributing $300 and Somerset County Recreation and Parks is adding another $200 plus the kiosk. Upon its completion, the park will be maintained by a group overseen by Smith Island United and local residents. For more details contact Eddie Somers, 410-726-8939.

Two benches, three picnic tables, a bike rack and sign are being installed in Ewell to create a new park.
