PRINCESS ANNE — The American Fisheries Society Student Subunit at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is pleased to invite Delmarva-area citizens to a daylong research symposium focused on Delmarva's Aquatic Resources and Ecosystems on April 28, 2017.
The symposium will highlight student research related to the aquatic resources and ecosystems found throughout the Delmarva Peninsula and facilitate open discussions amongst the various stakeholders in Delmarva’s resources—commercial and recreational fisheries, non-profits and NGOs, academia, and state and federal agencies.
“This is a great opportunity to come learn about some of the important research going on in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Delmarva coastline,” said Noelle Olson, president of the AFS Student Subunit at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). “Attendees will be able to meet the students, scientists, and environmentalists who work hard to make our waters safe for fishing and recreation.”
The day will be divided between the Assateague Island National Park Headquarters and the Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center in Berlin, Md.
The morning session will feature a panel discussion on the past, present, and future of these resources with representatives from these sectors, taking place at the Assateague Island National Park Headquarters.
In the afternoon, the Delmarva community is invited to the Sarbanes Center to learn about the ongoing research and see exhibits from Assateague Island State Park, Assateague Coastal Trust, Maryland Coastal Bays Program, the NOAA Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC), the NSF CREST Center for the Integrated Study of Coastal Ecosystem Processes and Dynamics, and more. The afternoon session also includes poster and oral presentations and will be open to the public starting at 1 p.m.
Interested participants invited to register for the morning session or attend the afternoon session, which is free and open to the public. Registration is $15 for students and $25 for professionals.
The event is hosted by the UMES American Fisheries Society (AFS) Tidewater Chapter Student Subunit.
