Newark mayor denies trespassing at immigration detention center following arrest

SUMMARY: Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is denying that he trespassed at a new federal immigration detention center during a confrontation that led to his arrest. A Department of Homeland Security official said Saturday that the investigation was ongoing. Baraka was released around 8 p.m. Friday night after spending several hours in custody. He was accused of trespassing and ignoring warnings to leave the Delaney Hall facility. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin accused the Democrat, who is seeking his party’s nomination for governor this year, of playing “political games.”

US--EARTHQUAKE-US SOUTHEAST

A Tennessee earthquake rattles homes as far away as Atlanta with 4.1 magnitude

SUMMARY: An earthquake of 4.1 magnitude has been reported in Tennessee and was felt in Atlanta, Georgia, and western North Carolina. That is according to the U.S. Geological Survey and local news reports. The website for USGS said the earthquake originated shortly after 9 a.m. EDT Saturday about 12 miles from Greenback, Tennessee. Earthquakes are not uncommon in the region. The USGS says there is a 5% chance of a magnitude 4 or larger aftershock in the next week. Damage does not usually occur from earthquakes until they reach a magnitude of somewhere above 4 or 5, although it depends on variables such as building construction, soil and distance from the epicenter.

US--AP POLL-TRANSGENDER ISSUES

Transgender issues are a strength for Trump, AP-NORC poll finds

SUMMARY: A new AP-NORC poll finds that most U.S. adults agree with President Donald Trump that whether a person is a man or woman is determined by their sex at birth. About half of Americans approve of how Trump has handled transgender issues, according to the survey — a relative high point for a president whose overall job approval is about 4 in 10. The poll also finds nuance in answers. Most oppose using federal insurance programs to pay for gender-affirming care for transgender young people, but more support allowing transgender military service members than oppose it. Democrats especially are divided in their views on transgender-related policies.

US--TRUMP-MASS FIRINGS

Judge pauses much of Trump administration’s massive downsizing of federal agencies

SUMMARY: A California judge has ordered the Trump administration to halt much of its massive downsizing of the federal workforce. Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco said President Donald Trump and his administration failed to get approval from Congress to initiate the cuts. That is required by the Constitution. The order issued Friday comes in response to a lawsuit filed by a a coalition of labor unions, nonprofit groups, cities and counties. Department of Justice lawyers say Trump’s executive order and a DOGE memo calling for large-scale reductions merely provided guidance and general principles.

US--SOUTHERN ACCENT DISAPPEARING

Is the Southern accent fixin’ to disappear in parts of the US South?

SUMMARY: Southern accents are disappearing in some parts of the U.S. South due to the migration of people into the region from other parts of the United States and around the world. A series of research papers released late last year chronicles the diminishment of the Southern accent among Black residents of the Atlanta area, white working-class people in the New Orleans area and people who grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. More than 5.8 million people have moved to the South in the 2020s. That’s four times the combined amount of the three other regions. But one study author notes the Southern accent is unlikely to disappear completely.

US--NEWARK AIRPORT-RADAR OUTAGE

Air traffic controllers for Newark airport briefly lose radar access again

SUMMARY: The air traffic controllers directing planes into the Newark, New Jersey, airport lost their radar Friday morning for the second time in two weeks. The Federal Aviation Administration said the radar at the facility in Philadelphia that directs planes in and out of Newark airport went black for 90 seconds at 3:55 a.m. Friday. That’s similar to what happened on April 28. That first radar outage led to hundreds of flights being cancelled or delayed at the Newark airport in the past two weeks after the FAA slowed down traffic at the airport to ensure safety. U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer blamed the problems on the lack of proper air traffic controller staffing and modern technology.

Trump team mulls suspending the constitutional right of habeas corpus to speed deportations. Can it?

To achieve that, he says President Donald Trump’s team is “actively looking at” suspending habeas corpus, the constitutional right for people to legally challenge their detention by the government. Such a move would be aimed at migrants as part of the Republican president’s broader crackdown at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Constitution says habeas corpus, “shall not be suspended, unless when, in cases of rebellion or invasion, the public safety may require it.” Miller is suggesting the U.S. is facing “an invasion” of migrants.

Bill Cassidy in next year’s Republican primary. Word of that discussion comes from multiple people familiar with the matter. There’s unease within Trump’s base about the two-term senator. Cassidy voted to convict Trump in Trump’s 2021 impeachment trial over the Jan. 6 riot in Washington. And Cassidy, who’s a medical doctor, expressed doubts about Robert F. As US and China begin trade talks in Geneva, Trump’s tariff hammer looks less mighty than he claims

SUMMARY: The way President Donald Trump sees it, beating China in a trade war should be easy. After all, the Chinese sell Americans three times as much stuff as Americans sell them. Therefore, they have more to lose. Inflict enough pain like 145% tariffs and they’ll beg for mercy. So far, the Chinese have refused to fold. SUMMARY: The U.S. treasury secretary and America’s top trade negotiator have begun talks with high-ranking Chinese officials in Switzerland to de-escalate a dispute that threatens to cut off trade between the world’s two biggest economies and damage the global economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer have begun meetings in Geneva with a Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. Diplomats from both sides also confirmed that the talks have begun. Prospects for a major breakthrough appear dim. But there is hope that the two countries will reduce the massive taxes — tariffs — they’ve slapped on each other’s goods. The sides took a lunch break after about two hours of talks.

US--GOOGLE SETTLEMENT-TEXAS

Google will pay Texas $1.4B to settle claims the company collected users’ data without permission

SUMMARY: Google will pay $1.4 billion to Texas to settle claims the company collected data on users without permission. The state’s attorney general announced the settlement Friday. The agreement settles several claims Texas made against the search giant in 2022 related to geolocation, incognito searches and biometric data. The state argued Google was “unlawfully tracking and collecting users’ private data.” Google spokesperson José Castañeda said the agreement settles an array of “old claims,” some of which relate to product policies the company has already changed. Paxton said the $1.4 billion is the largest amount won by any state in a settlement with Google over this type of data-privacy violations.

US-SCI--SOVIET VENUS SPACECRAFT

Soviet-era spacecraft plunges to Earth after 53 years stuck in orbit

SUMMARY: A Soviet-era spacecraft has plunged to Earth, more than a half-century after its failed launch to Venus. The half-ton spacecraft fell out of orbit on Saturday. The European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking confirmed its uncontrolled entry, as did the Russian Space Agency. The Russians said it came in over the Indian Ocean, but some experts questioned the location. It was not immediately known how much, if any, of the Kosmos 482 spacecraft survived the fiery descent through the atmosphere. Experts said ahead of time that some if not all of it might come crashing down, given it was built to withstand a landing on Venus. The chances of anyone being clobbered by the spacecraft debris were exceedingly low.

US-MED--AUTISM-SCIENCE

Experts call Kennedy’s plan to find autism’s cause unrealistic

SUMMARY: Many autism experts say the Trump administration’s plan to find autism’s causes is unrealistic. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is banking on a new database of insurance claims and other health records, the kind of information used to track diagnoses and access to care. Autism science already has proven that genes play a huge role in development of the complex brain disorder. And cutting edge research now is focusing on uncovering differences inside the brain that lead to autism symptoms, changes that can be studied through noninvasive testing of brain activity and donations of whole brains after death.

SCI--CHIMPANZEE DRUMMING

Chimpanzees drum with regular rhythm when they beat on tree trunks, a form of ancient communication

SUMMARY: A new study shows that chimpanzees drum with regular rhythm when they beat on tree trunks. Previous research has shown that chimps have their own signature drumming style. A new analysis of 371 bouts of chimpanzee drumming demonstrates that the chimps clearly play their instruments -- the tree trunks -- with regular rhythms. This suggests that the ability to produce rhythm predates the last common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees, dating back more than 6 million years. Scientists believe that the drumming is a form of long-distance communication. The research was published Friday in the journal Current Biology.

REL—QUAKERS-NEW YORK-TO-WASHINGTON MARCH

Quakers march against Trump’s crackdown on immigrants carrying on their long faith tradition

SUMMARY: A group of Quakers are marching more than 300 miles from New York City to Washington, D.C. to demonstrate against the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants. The march extends a long tradition of Quaker activism to end wars and slavery and support women’s voting rights in line with the faith’s core belief. It’s called the “Inner Light” – a direct link to God guiding them to fight for justice and peace. Five Quaker congregations filed a lawsuit earlier this year challenging a Trump administration move giving immigration agents more leeway to make arrests at houses of worship.

LT--VATICAN-POPE-AMAZON-CATHOLICS

‘Leo will follow Francis.’ Amazon Catholics hope the new pope will protect the rain forest

SUMMARY: For years before becoming Pope Leo XIV — as a parish priest and then bishop in Peru — Robert Prevost built ties with interfaith environmental networks and Indigenous organizations to place forest protection and rights at the center of Church concern. All of this is bringing hope that the new pope will make protecting the Amazon and curbing climate change central tenants of his papacy. The Amazon is a key regulator of the climate, as its dense forests absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that when released into the atmosphere heats the planet. Chicago-born Prevost, who spent about two decades in Peru’s countryside, was chosen pontiff on Thursday.

REL--VATICAN POPE-CREOLE ROOTS

Pope Leo XIV’s Creole heritage highlights complex history of racism and the church in America

SUMMARY: The election of Pope Leo XIV, who is the first U.S. pope and has Creole roots, is raising more awareness about the complexity of the Creole identity. The pope has not openly spoken about his racial identity, but historical records highlight a story of migration common to African American families leaving the racism of the Jim Crow South. Black and Creole Catholics in the U.S. say that a pope who holds these multiple identities is just what the Catholic Church needs to unify the global church and elevate the profile of Black Catholics, whose history and contributions, they say, have been overlooked.

FBN--SAINTS-CARR RETIRES

Saints QB Derek Carr is retiring because of ‘significant degenerative changes’ to his right shoulder

SUMMARY: The New Orleans Saints say veteran quarterback Derek Carr has decided to retire because of a labral tear in his right shoulder and “significant degenerative changes” to his rotator cuff. The 34-year-old Carr has played for 11 pro seasons since being selected out of Fresno State by the then-Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. Carr was acquired by the Saints as a free agent in 2023 but had mixed results in New Orleans, going 14-13 as a starter while also struggling through oblique, hand and head injuries that caused him to miss seven games last season. His retirement comes two weeks after the Saints selected Louisville QB Tyler Shough in the second round of the draft.
