The May the 4th phrase appeared as early as 1979 in a British political ad and has exploded in recent years. US--TRUMP-WESTERN COAL PLANTS

Arizona communities bank on Trump’s push for coal to ensure they’re not forgotten

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump wants to tap into “beautiful, clean coal” to help meet the electricity demands of what he bills as a new dawn of manufacturing and technological advancement in the United States. But some utilities say coal is no longer the answer. Stuck in the middle are communities that depend on the jobs and tax revenues. Coal-fired power plants are woven into nearly every aspect of life in the northeastern parts of Arizona. Residents in the southwestern state see Trump’s efforts as an opportunity to save their towns and stay in the energy race for another generation, no matter if coal — or something else — provides the fuel.

But Abel has been his designated successor for years, and Abel has already been managing all of Berkshire’s non-insurance businesses. He will now take on the responsibility for running Berkshire’s insurance businesses and investing its cash. Able said he was “humbled and honored to be part of Berkshire as we go forward.”

SUMMARY: Alireza Doroudi has been detained in an immigration facility in Louisiana for nearly six weeks. Doroudi’s detention has instilled fear in the small Iranian community in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he and his fiancee are doctoral students. Doroudi’s visa was revoked in 2023, but he wasn’t given a reason. His fiancee says he was told that he was legally allowed to stay in the U.S. as long as he remained a student. SUMMARY: After Hurricane Helene devastated Asheville, North Carolina, the sound coming from open car windows as residents gathered on a street at the top of a ridge trying to get cell service last fall was Blue Ridge Public Radio. And as they stood in line for water or food, the latest news they had heard on the station was a frequent topic of conversation. SUMMARY: Warren Buffett’s company reported just over one-third of last year’s profit Saturday a few hours before he announced plans to retire as Berkshire Hathaway’s CEO at the end of the year. Berkshire Vice Chairman Greg Abel will take over as CEO as Buffett has long planned. The profit numbers were weighed down by a major drop in the value of its investments and $860 million in insurance losses related to policies that Geico and its other insurance companies wrote before the devastating Southern California wildfires. Pritzker and Ocasio-Cortez: A billionaire and a former bartender emerge as Trump resistance leaders

SUMMARY: Democrats are looking for the right message and messengers to lead the opposition to President Donald Trump in his second term. And two vastly different politicians are emerging as top Democratic voices. They are Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York congresswoman. Both have drawn praise for high-profile speeches and events that have excited voters on the left. Pritzker is a billionaire heir who calls Trump as a threat to democracy and national stability. Ocasio-Cortez maintains her antiestablishment profile and labels Trump a corrupt billionaire who’s hurting the working class he says he represents. He also says he doesn’t think military force would be needed to make Canada the “51st state.” And he’s downplaying the possibility that he’d look to run for a third term in the White House. US--TRUMP-CHECKS-AND-BALANCES

America’s long history of ‘checks and balances’ is being tested by Trump like rarely before

SUMMARY: The principle of “checks and balances” is rooted in the Constitution’s design of a national government with three distinct, coequal branches. Those are the executive, meaning the president, the legislative, meaning Congress, and the judicial, meaning the Supreme Court and the lower courts. President Donald Trump is testing that system like rarely before. He’s doing it by signing dozens of executive orders, by closing or sharply reducing government agencies that are funded by Congress, and by denigrating judges who’ve issued dozens of rulings against him. One historian says the framers of American democracy “had great distrust of concentrated authority” and that’s the origin of a system of checks and balances.

Amid Cinco de Mayo celebrations, a tax on Mexican tomatoes looms

SUMMARY: Guacamole has been spared from tariffs for now. But salsa may not be so lucky. While threatened tariffs on Mexican avocados have been put on pause, the U.S. government plans to put a nearly 21% duty on fresh Mexican tomatoes starting July 14. A duty — like a tariff — is a tax on imports, and this one will impact the 4 billion pounds of tomatoes the U.S. imports from Mexico each year. One expert expects U.S. retail prices for fresh tomatoes to rise by around 10.5% if the duty goes through. Proponents say the duty will help the shrinking U.S. industry compete with Mexican growers. But opponents say it will cost U.S. jobs and make tomatoes more expensive.

US--FINANCIAL MARKETS-TARIFF TURMOIL

How the stock market made back all its losses after Trump escalated the trade war

SUMMARY: It felt much longer, but the U.S. stock market needed just a few weeks to roar all the way back to where it was on President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day.” That’s when he shocked Wall Street by announcing much steeper tariffs than expected on nearly all U.S. trading partners. Within just four days, the S&P 500 fell about 12%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost nearly 4,600 points, or about 11%. This past Friday, though, the S&P 500 rallied for a ninth straight gain and pulled back to where it was on April 2. Trump’s 90-day pause on many tariffs and a resilient economy helped the market bounce back.

US--WARREN BUFFETT-RETIREMENT-HIS DEALS

Warren Buffett’s best and worst investments in his 60 years leading Berkshire Hathaway

SUMMARY: Billionaire investor Warren Buffett says he wants to step down as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of the year. The revelation on Saturday came as a surprise because the 94-year-old had previously said he didn’t plan to retire. One of the world’s richest people and most accomplished investors, Buffett took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 when it was a textiles manufacturer. He turned the company into a conglomerate by finding other businesses and stocks to buy that were selling for less than they were worth. His success made him a Wall Street icon, but Buffett has acknowledged that not all of his investments over the years were winners.

US--WARREN BUFFETT’S SUCCESSOR

Who is Greg Abel, the executive picked to be successor to Warren Buffett?

SUMMARY: When Warren Buffett announced at his annual shareholder meeting that he is stepping down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of the year, he elevated a 62-year-old Canadian executive named Greg Abel who has long been one of his top lieutenants. For the past seven years, Abel has been overseeing Berkshire’s BNSF railroad and its treat makers See’s Candies and Dairy Queen along with dozens of other manufacturing and retail businesses that Buffett acquired over the years. He grew up in Canada as a hockey player and learned the value of hard work as he redeemed discarded bottles and worked for a small company filling fire extinguishers. Now he finds himself at the top of the food chain.

US-MED--CDC-DISEASE TRACKING

Cuts have eliminated more than a dozen US government health-tracking programs

SUMMARY: More than a dozen data-gathering programs that track deaths and disease appear to have been eliminated in the tornado of layoffs and proposed budget cuts in the Trump administration’s first 100 days. The Associated Press examined draft and final budget proposals and spoke to more than a dozen current and former federal employees to determine the scope of the cuts to programs tracking basic facts about Americans’ health. Among those terminated at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are experts tracking abortions, pregnancies, job-related injuries, lead poisonings, sexual violence and youth smoking.

US-MED--VACCINE HESITANCY

A community rallied to share flu shot experiences. Then the government stopped the study

SUMMARY: Some Denver parents got texts during this winter’s brutal flu season with videos sharing why people in their neighborhoods chose flu shots for their kids. It was an unusual study about trust and vaccines in a historically Black community but no one will know how it worked out: The Trump administration canceled the project before the data could be analyzed. It’s an example of research being lost at time when understanding vaccine hesitancy is especially urgent. Flu killed a near-record 216 children this year and vaccine-preventable measles and whooping cough are soaring.

Guatemala’s cardinal trusts migration will be a priority for next pope as he readies for conclave

SUMMARY: Cardinal Álvaro Ramazzini is taking to his first conclave the same spirit that guided his decades-long front-line ministry among the migrants, poor and Indigenous people in Guatemala’s highlands. That is, ensuring that the Gospel isn’t preached “in the abstract.” Four days before Catholic cardinals gather to elect Pope Francis’ successor, Ramazzini told The Associated Press that the church has embarked on a path of social justice that he trusts the next pope will continue. Ramazzini said the church has to advocate for migrants forced by dire poverty to migrate along cartel-controlled routes where they’re often extorted or trafficked.

EU-REL--VATICAN-CONCLAVE-CHALLENGES

Pope Francis left unfinished business after a 12-year papacy. What challenges await the next pope?

SUMMARY: While Pope Francis accomplished a lot in his 12-year papacy, he left much unfinished business and many challenges for his successor — from the Vatican’s disastrous finances to the wars raging on multiple continents. When the conclave’s cardinals finish casting their ballots in the Sistine Chapel, the 267th pope will have to decide whether to continue with Francis’ policies, radically change them, or abandon them altogether. He also must choose what new projects will take precedence. Among the pressing issues are the role of women in the church, the division between traditionalists and progressives, what to do about clergy sex abuse and whether to LGBTQ+ Catholics.

Trump draws criticism with AI image of himself as the pope ahead of the papal conclave

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has posted an artificial intelligence-generated image of himself dressed as pope. The social media post comes as the mourning of Pope Francis continues and the papal conclave is set to begin in a few days. The image is raising eyebrows on social media, at the Vatican, from a group representing Catholic bishops in New York and from Italians. Catholics are in the period of official mourning after Francis’ death. Catholic cardinals are due to open the solemn conclave to elect his successor on Wednesday. The death of a pope and election of another is a matter of utmost solemnity for Catholics

Visa crackdown leads international students in the US to reconsider summer travel

SUMMARY: International students in the U.S. are reconsidering their travel plans this summer after a wave of student status terminations and visa revocations. Even before students suddenly began losing permission to study in the U.S., some colleges were encouraging international students and faculty to postpone travel, citing government efforts to deport students involved in pro-Palestinian activism and worries of potential travel bans. As the scale of the status terminations emerged in recent weeks, more have cautioned against non-essential travel abroad for international students. University of California, Berkeley has issued an advisory saying upcoming international travel was risky due to “strict vetting and enforcement.”

Lady Gaga rocks Copacabana Beach with a free concert for more than 2 million fans

SUMMARY: Lady Gaga gave a free concert on Copacabana Beach Saturday night, the second such show in as many years organized by Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall. The show was the biggest of the pop star’s career, as it was for Madonna who also turned the expansive stretch of sand into a massive dance floor last year. Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028. While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio, the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors.

Sovereignty reigns in 151st Kentucky Derby, outdueling favorite Journalism in the slop

SUMMARY: Sovereignty outdueled 3-1 favorite Journalism down the stretch to win the 151st Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths in the slop. Trainer Bill Mott won his first Derby in 2019, also run on a sloppy track, when Country House was elevated to first after Maximum Security crossed the finish line first and was disqualified after a 22-minute delay. This time, he knew the result immediately. Journalism found trouble in the first turn and jockey Umberto Rispoli moved him to the outside. He and Sovereignty hooked up at the eighth pole before Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado pulled away.

The 20-year-old man who fell to the warning track at a Pirates game is awake

SUMMARY: The fan who fell from a 21-foot-high wall onto the warning track at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game is awake and alert. The organizer of a GoFundMe page for Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old who slipped off a railing and onto the field during the seventh inning Wednesday, said Markwood is improving. Jennifer Phillips, who is organizing the fundraiser, says Markwood has made significant progress since being admitted to the trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. The team’s internal investigation into the incident says Markwood did not purchase any alcohol, but that one of the people who attended the game with him did legally buy a handful of alcoholic beverages.
