MARION STATION — A teenager was killed and her mother critically injured when their vehicle was struck from behind Friday afternoon, March 27, in Somerset County.

The deceased victim is identified as Andrea N. Joyner, 15, of Crisfield. She was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) by ambulance where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the 1996 Toyota Camry Andrea Joyner was riding in is identified as her mother, Patricia A. Joyner, 38, of Crisfield. She was transported by ambulance to PRMC. Later that evening, she was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The driver of a 2006 Freightliner box truck is identified as Christopher Garcia, 22, of North Bergen, New Jersey. His passenger is identified as Romairo T. Shuler, 28, of Salisbury, Md. Both men were taken by ambulance to PRMC where they were treated and released. The truck is registered to Home Delivery Inc., of Seaford, DE.

A third vehicle involved was a 2009 Dodge Journey, driven by Rosario J. Barrett, 73, of Marion. She was transported to PRMC for treatment of what are reported to be non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. March 27, Maryland State Police at the Princess Anne Barrack were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on Rt. 413 near Lovers Lane. Due to the severity of the crash and the involvement of a commercial vehicle, barrack troopers requested assistance from the State Police Crash Team and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.

The preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota and the truck were both northbound on Rt. 413. The Toyota was stopped to make a left turn, apparently into a driveway. At this time, the investigation indicates the truck failed to stop and struck the rear of the Toyota, pushing it into the southbound lane and into the path of the oncoming Dodge.

The preliminary investigation does not indicate alcohol was a factor in this crash. The Crash Team is conducting a detailed reconstruction of the crash. Upon completion of the investigation, the report will be forwarded to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office for review regarding charges to be filed. No charges have been filed at this time.
