Tax exemption not possible for Eastern Shore Forest Products

Posted

PRINCESS ANNE — The president of Eastern Shore Forest Products Inc. continues to be ineligible for a personal property tax exemption from Somerset County unless the state changes the law.

Tom Johnson was granted exemptions from 2009 through 2013 but in a letter to county leaders states he was “promised by the County Commissioners” at a March 18, 2008 meeting that the board would “pursue a permanent exemption” but that has not taken place.

County Administrator Doug Taylor said the code allows an exemption each year with county approval for a maximum of five years, and therefore Mr. Johnson is ineligible. And if a permanent exemption is desired by the current board, it would require General Assembly legislation.
