Sylvia E. Smith CAMBRIDGE - Sylvia E. Smith, daughter of the late Harriet A. Watkins and the late Emanuel E. Watkins, departed this life on Saturday morning, July 10, 2010, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She was born on Jan. 22, 1933, at the Cambridge, Maryland Hospital. She received her early education from the public schools in Cambridge, Md., graduating from the F.D. St. Clair High School in 1949. After high school she attended Bowie State College in Bowie, Maryland where she graduated with her B.A. degree in education. Her religious training and guidance were started early in life at Bethel A.M.E. church. Sylvia had a passion for educating children. This passion came from her experience received as a child in a one room schoolhouse with her aunt Carrie. She taught in Dorchester County for over a 45 year time span. Throughout her teaching career she received certificates from the Dorchester County Branch of the NAACP, the Maryland State Board of Education for the Teacher of the year and Salute to Excellence from the State of Maryland for her outstanding contributions to education. Over the course of 45 years she has seen many students go on to adult life, with former students sharing many success stories with her. Some things that brought her enjoyment were baking, dancing, and being with her family. She leaves to cherish her warm memories, a loving and devoted husband of 55 plus years, Mr. Monroe J. Smith, two daughters, Cynthia Smith, Baltimore, MD, Alicia Smith (Mervin) , Laurel, MD, three sons, Monroe, Glenn, and Brian Smith all of Cambridge, MD; a sister in law Edna Watkins of Cambridge, several grand and great grandchildren, two special nephews Edward Watkins Jr. and Robert O.Watkins, 4 special nieces in laws, Linda Drumwright, Brenda Miller, Veronica Jones, and Joyce Bowers and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jackson, two brothers, Commissioner Edward E. Watkins and Robert O. Watkins. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010, 2 p.m., at Bethel AME Church, 623 Pine St., Cambridge with a viewing Friday evening 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.
