PRINCESS ANNE — Sugar Water at the Washington Hotel announces the promotion of James Daniels to Executive Chef.
The Deal Island native joined the restaurant at its opening in May 2024 and was recognized for his work ethic, leadership and commitment to the team. He moved from Line cook to Chef de Cuisine to, finally, Executive Chef in just months — an extraordinary rise that speaks to both his capabilities and his heart.
As Executive Chef, he will guide Sugar Water's culinary direction with the same philosophy that has been present since day one: thoughtful creativity, intentional ingredients, and a deep celebration of the farm-and-water-to-table traditions of the Eastern Shore.
"He brings passion, work ethic, and a deep connection to this community," said owner Dana Zucker. "We can't wait for guests to experience the continued evolution of Sugar Water's cuisine under his direction.”
Dana and her husband David met Mr. Daniels over six years ago, and they “knew the passion for food and the way he spoke about food, (that) he was going places. Who knew six years later we would own Sugar Water and James would be our Executive Chef.”
Mr. Daniels’ comes from a long line of watermen and learned to dredge, shuck, and prepare oysters. As the restaurant reported in its announcement, “This wasn't just a childhood pastime; it was the foundation of the deep respect and reverence he carries for local ingredients today.”
He is self-taught, “inspired by family, community, and a genuine love for cooking. He still lights up when talking about the spaghetti his mother made when he was young, a dish that sparked his passion for sharing meals that bring people together.”
