WESTOVER — Crisfield Academy and High School foreign languages teacher and state Teacher of the Year Finalist Anna Breland recently spent the day in Annapolis on January 22, 2015, being honored by state government officials. She and the other 23 local 2014 Teachers of the Year had a full itinerary.
During this annual Teacher of the Year Day the honored educations visited the floors of the Maryland Senate and the House of Delegates for special tributes and took part in an education briefing with State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery. Later each local Teacher of the Year met with their Senator and Delegate.
Ms. Breland said, “All Teachers of the Year were invited to have dinner on January 21 in Café Normandie. The next day, January 22, we had a short briefing in the morning and we were led to the State House where we were honored by the House of Delegates and the Senate. We were given a very warm welcome. Dr. Lowery called every TOY's name in the House where we received a standing ovation.
“Afterwards, we had a meeting with Dr. Lowery where we discussed PARCC testing, talked about Parent of the Year nominations and judging opportunities, had a brief question-answer session with Dr. Lowery and a delicious lunch. Later in the afternoon we had tet-a-tet meetings with the Delegates and Senators.”
In addition to meeting a number of Senators and Delegates, Breland met Governor Larry Hogan. She said she was Impressed with the recognition she received at Maryland’s State House. In addition, she learned more information about the PARCC testing from the session with Dr. Lowery.
