WESTOVER — Somerset Intermediate School physical education teacher Marissa Dugan was among 17 inductees into the Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s 2014 Athletics Hall of Fame. Ms. Dugan was a standout softball player at the Division II school where she earned her Bachelors in sports medicine and physical training. She later received a Master’s in teaching from Salisbury University.
Ms. Dugan, the daughter of a coal miner and a stay-at-home mom, grew up in a mining town in southwestern Pennsylvania and was a star outfielder in high school. At IUP she was initially a second baseman but moved to right field her freshman season. From there she went to center field for her final three years. Ms. Dugan was one of the key players who helped IUP take two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1999 and 2000, and as a senior led what is now the Crimson Hawks with a .363 batting average.
The statistics she compiled during her career continue in the record books to be among the best from her peers, including 119 RBIs that is second and 14 triples that is third overall. Her 105 career runs rank fifth. She earned all-conference honors four years in a row, and first-team recognition as a junior and senior.
The induction luncheon was held in late September at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. There are now 216 former athletes, coaches and administrators in the IUP Athletics Hall of Fame.
Ms. Dugan was a Somerset County Teacher of the Year candidate in 2012, representing SIS.
