CAMBRIDGE - Sara Lewis Hurley, 85, formerly of Vienna, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.
She was born April 18, 1922 near Vienna, daughter of the late Frank H. and Blanche Murphy Lewis.
Mrs. Hurley was educated in the Vienna schools and married Donald M. Hurley on Jan. 10, 1942. She worked for Western Publishing Co. for many years, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of Vienna United Methodist Church, where she sang with the Senior Choir, was treasurer of the Parsonage Fund, and was a former lay-representative to the Peninsula-Delaware Conference. She also held membership with the United Methodist Women where she held various offices and was the "Sunshine Lady" from 1982 to 1990.
Mrs. Hurley was a member and past president of the Vienna Heritage Committee, a charter member of Vienna Jr. Homemaker's Club and a charter member of the Vienna VFC Ladies Auxiliary and was the first president to succeed herself. She was a member of the Seniors Bowling Group at Cherokee Lanes in Salisbury, where she served as president fo 11 years and coordinator and program director for 15 years.
Prior to Mr. Hurley's death on Feb. 20, 1999, Mr. and Mrs. Hurley traveled extensively and became acquainted with many people. She enjoyed reading and music, and home, family and friends were important to her.
She is survived by one son, Donald M. Hurley Jr. of Mardela Springs and his wife, Catherine "Tillie" Hurley; one grandson, Donald M. Hurley III of Selbyville and his wife, Kim; one granddaughter, Donna Lynn Anderson of Sharptown and her husband, Jimmy; six great-grandchildren, Justin Hurley, Abigail Hurley, Danielle Bradford and her husband, Jordan, Ashley Callahan, Kaity Callahan and Virginia Anderson and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim Lewis, Earl Lewis and Monroe Lewis; four sisters, Mabel Bell, Della Thompson, Thelma Lewis and Effa Hanks Lewis; two great-grandddaughters, Carla Ann Willis and Christina Grace Hurley.
The family will receive friends on Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Vienna United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Kim Gilson and the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market.
