PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Page Leonard (born Mary Page Hubbard), 85, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 13, at Summit Commons Health Center in Providence, R.I., with her daughter, Lauren at her side. Born in Cambridge, Md., to Milton and Rosalie Hubbard, she attended Cambridge High School. Active in athletics, she was on the girl's basketball team and was Drum Majorette for the High School Marching Band. She was named Miss Eastern Shore Outdoors for which she participated in a snowy photo shoot wearing a white fox bikini. Two years after a fortune teller told her she would marry a man named Leon, she met her future husband Edson Leonard. They married after three weekend dates and remained husband and wife until his death in 2005. Page typed and edited Edson's many books and articles on fly fishing. Their dedication to each other was exemplified when he dedicated his book, Flies to her, saying "To my wife, the most important Page in this book." While living in Solana Beach, Calif., she attended Palomar College, was a local swim instructor, enjoyed cake decorating, flower arranging, and gardening. Page enjoyed the friendships that blossomed in a new neighborhood full of young families. After moving to Rhode Island in 1965, Page continued to be active with gardening, and added bridge, baking, yoga, healthy eating, and bike riding to her regime. She worked at (the prior) Ludlow in Barrington, then at Gallery of Homes in Barrington, and finally in the auditing department at Fleet Bank, where she enjoyed many friendships. After retirement, she joined the Barrington Woman's Club and was as an active member participated in bowling, bridge, the reading group, the entertainment committee, and the fashion show. She rose to the position of President in 1999-2001 and remained a member until 2005. Page developed Parkinson's Dementia in 2004 and maintained her sense of humor and dignity well into her disease. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Edson Leonard Jr.; and her son, Jack Leonard; and her brother, Milton (Mickey) Hubbard Jr. She is survived by her son, Eric Leonard and his wife (Dee) Priscilla, and their two sons, Mark and Casey. She is remembered fondly by her best friend, Fran Shugmann of Solana Beach, Calif. She is also survived by her daughter Lauren and her partner Lori Dahlberg. Calling hours were Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with a service at 5:30 in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Avenue, Riverside. The interment will be today at 1 p.m. in Forest Chapel Cemetery, Nayatt Road Barrington.
