PRINCESS ANNE — Two players for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team earned weekly awards for their efforts in road wins over St. Bonaventure and Duquesne. Senior forward Mike Myers was named Player of the Week by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, as well as receiving the Lou Henson National Player of the Week Award from CollegeInsider.com. Meanwhile, the MEAC also awarded Rookie of the Week honors to Hawks freshman guard Ryan Andino.

Myers, a senior from Camden, N.J., is the second Hawk to earn MEAC Player of the Week honors this season, along with junior Devin Martin. In addition to the conference award, CollegeInsider.com named Myers as the week’s recipient of the Lou Henson National Player of the Week Award, presented weekly to the top mid-major player in NCAA Division I. Myers is the first winner of the Lou Henson Award from the MEAC this year.

Myers turned in two phenomenal performances for the week of December 22 to 28, leading the Hawks to two impressive road wins over Atlantic 10 foes, St. Bonaventure and Duquesne. Against the Bonnies, Myers led the team with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, despite fouling out with four minutes to play. In the Dec. 28 victory at Duquesne, Myers collected his first double-double as a Hawk with 22 points and 14 rebounds, both career-highs for the forward. Again Myers was very efficient from the field, going 9-of-13 for the contest. The big man was crucial in holding off the Dukes down the stretch, scoring 18 of his 22 points in the second half.

Andino, a freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was honored as the conference’s top rookie for the week. Andino keyed the Hawks’ offensive outbursts at St. Bonaventure and Duquesne with his stellar shooting. The guard made four of six three-point attempts against the Bonnies for all of his 12 points. Andino scored seven points in the win over the Dukes, dishing out a career-high four assists as well. The newcomer’s sharpshooting for the week (7-of-11 overall and 5-of-8 from deep) helped the Hawks to their highest point totals of the season, 82 at St. Bonaventure and 78 at Duquesne.
