HBCUs are underfunded. A legal effort starting in Missouri seeks to fix it
SUMMARY: An effort to address decades of underfunding at some historically Black college and universities kicked off Wednesday with a lawsuit against the state of Missouri. Students and graduates of Lincoln University in the state’s capital in Jefferson City allege the lack of resources undercut their education and devalued their degrees. And around a dozen other states are in the crosshairs of a newly formed group, called the 1890 Project. The University of Missouri system and the governor’s office said in written statements that they couldn’t comment on pending litigation.

Why are out-of-state billionaires funding a California voter ID measure?
SUMMARY: Republican megadonors are backing California's Proposition 39, a measure requiring voter ID at polls. Illinois billionaire Richard Uihlein has contributed $17 million to the campaign. Other major donors include Steven Bray, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and Nicole Shanahan. Supporters argue it ensures election security, while opponents fear it could disenfranchise voters without IDs. Critics say voter fraud is rare, and the measure could unfairly impact low-income and minority groups. The measure's success in California could influence GOP strategies in battleground states. Despite support, polls show declining approval for Prop. 39.

Searching for ‘slimy, shiny, brownish stuff’: A retiree helps track down Pa.’s abandoned oil wells
SUMMARY: Barbara Laxon leads tours in Bradford, Pennsylvania, highlighting the impact of the oil and gas industry. The 74-year-old retiree shows visitors abandoned oil wells and hidden wellbores. Laxon moved to Pennsylvania to be closer to her son and got involved with Save Our Streams, an advocacy group focused on plugging abandoned oil wells. Pennsylvania has thousands of these wells, which can emit methane and leak toxic substances. Pennsylvania has plugged nearly 500 wells over the past five years, but state regulators struggle to identify where all of the state’s abandoned wells are located. Laxon and others document the wells and report them to the state.

Jayden Daniels pledges to 'embrace the brace' on left arm as Commanders QB returns to practice
SUMMARY: Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is back with a newly healed left elbow and a brace to accompany it. Daniels also might have a new catchphrase. He says he's going to “embrace the brace.” If he starts at home against the New York Giants on Sunday, Daniels would be returning to the lineup three weeks after he dislocated his left elbow when he tried to brace himself on a fall against Dallas in Week 2. It was the second elbow dislocation for Daniels, who suffered the same injury last season. He was a full participant in practice Wednesday, indicating he is on track to start.

Giants are 3-1 and underdogs again at Washington, which players are using as fuel
SUMMARY: The New York Giants are alone in first place in the NFC East for the first time in more than a decade, and they’re 3-1 for the first time since 2022. Coach John Harbaugh wants players to stay humble, and one thing that is helping is being an underdog again Sunday at Washington. The Commanders are New York's fourth opponent in five games to be favored, a slight that is infusing a short-handed roster with some extra motivation. Receiver Malik Nabers says he is sore and unsure about playing this weekend.

Jackson also wasn’t available before practice — Wednesday is when he usually talks — after injuring his ankle in Sunday’s win over Tennessee. Once kicked out of Yankee Stadium, Nick Martinez returns to try to pitch the Rays into ALCS
SUMMARY: Once ejected from Yankee Stadium as a college student, Nick Martinez returns trying to pitch the Tampa Bay Rays into the AL Championship Series. Martinez played for Fordham, just 5 miles from the stadium, and recalls being rowdy during a Red Sox game. Tampa leads the best-of-five AL Division Series 2-0 against New York. Martinez, who became an All-Star this year, was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2011 and later played in Japan, which he credits for revitalizing his career. Anders Lee and Vincent Trocheck bring simple, direct hockey to the Utah Mammoth
SUMMARY: The Utah Mammoth made the playoffs last spring with a young, fast core led by captain Clayton Keller and skilled forwards Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther. Then they lost in the first round, and it was clear something was missing. Over the summer, they brought in size and experience in Anders Lee and Vincent Trocheck, who have spent their entire NHL careers mucking it up in the Eastern Conference. Still to come is a formal separation to get out of the remaining years of his LIV contract. Banged-up Jets limping toward game vs. Browns with Breece Hall and Adonai Mitchell still sidelined
SUMMARY: The New York Jets could be without running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell again when they face the Cleveland Browns because of injuries. Coach Aaron Glenn said Wednesday that Hall, Mitchell, left guard Dylan Parham, and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa will be evaluated weekly. All four missed the Jets' loss to Chicago last Sunday. Hall has a quadriceps injury, while Mitchell has a finger injury. Parham hurt his knee against Detroit. The rookie wide receiver has become a big-time playmaker for Cleveland, which is a surprising 3-1 with quarterback Deshaun Watson resurrecting his stalled career. A second-round draft pick out of Washington, Boston leads all rookies in receiving yards and he's averaging an NFL-best 21.8 yards per catch. Yankees swept out of the AL Division Series by the Rays, extending their title drought to 17 years
SUMMARY: Max Fried gave up two home runs, the New York Yankees had one taken off the board by fan interference and then their season ended with a whimper. Rays beat Yankees 4-3 for 3-game Division Series sweep behind Mesa homer, fan interference call
SUMMARY: Victor Mesa Jr. hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Max Fried in the sixth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-3 with the help of a fan interference call for a three-game sweep of their AL Division Series. Ryan Vilade also homered for the Rays, who reached the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2020 and host the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Guardians in the opener on Monday. After Mesa’s homer gave the Rays a 4-2 lead, Anthony Volpe appeared to hit a two-run shot against Griffin Jax with two outs in the bottom half as a fan reached over the left-field wall and caught the ball. Fan interference denies Anthony Volpe a tying homer as Yankees get swept by Rays in ALDS
SUMMARY: Anthony Volpe was denied a tying home run for the New York Yankees in Game 3 of their AL Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays when a replay review determined a fan interfered with his drive to deep left field. The Yankees wound up losing 4-3 by the very run that was taken off the board and had their season end in a three-game sweep. Players and managers on both sides mostly agreed the right decision was made. Nittany Lions enter 'White Out' game against No. 19 USC desperate to find an identity

Colts CB Sauce Gardner calls his effort and pursuit 'embarrassing' and wants to leave it in London
SUMMARY: Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner was his own worst critic on Wednesday. His self-critique was even harsher than the outsiders he says he tunes out. The two-time All-Pro repeatedly used the word “embarrassing” to describe the game tape he broke down after last weekend’s 30-13 victory over Washington, acknowledging his effort and pursuit weren't good enough and promising it would never happen again. Gardner gave up two big plays in the game and also drew a penalty on a third down stop that extended a Commanders drive. But those weren't the only problems.
