US--Northeast-Storms

Storms and possible tornadoes pummel the Northeast US, flooding roads and damaging beaches

SUMMARY: Heavy rain and winds are pounding the Northeast U.S. Storms tore through a beach on Long Island and stranded dozens of people in their cars in New Jersey on Thursday. Photos and video shared on social media show debris thrown in the air and rain pummeling down as a possible tornado touched down at Atlantic Beach on Long Island’s outer barrier. It tore apart a major beach club, leaving broken beach chairs and wood beams littered across the shoreline. No major injuries have been reported. Police in Dover, Delaware, say a likely tornado touched down and caused significant damage across the city.

US--New York Harbor-Capsized Boat

Speedboat driver in fatal New York Harbor capsizing was in the US illegally, authorities say

SUMMARY: The pilot of a speedboat that capsized during a tour around the Statue of Liberty has been arrested by U.S. immigration authorities who say he was in the country illegally. The Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday that Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana falsely claimed he was a U.S. citizen when he entered the country in 2007. Hernandez-Umana has a pending federal criminal case in connection with the Aug. 8 crash that killed an infant and her mother. Online records show the 46-year-old citizen of El Salvador is being held at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Homeland Security secretary said Hernandez-Umana will eventually be deported. His lawyer declined comment.

Harvard agrees to $53 million settlement over body parts stolen and sold by former morgue manager

SUMMARY: Harvard University Medical School has agreed to pay $53 million to settle a class action lawsuit over its former morgue manager’s illegal sale of human remains. The school announced this in a letter, calling Cedric Lodge’s actions a betrayal of their values. Lodge was sentenced to eight years in prison last year for selling body parts. His wife and six others were also sentenced. Harvard says Lodge acted without their knowledge. In addition to the settlement, the school plans to improve its Anatomical Gift Program and establish a scholarship to honor donors.

Vikings receivers savor tips from Randy Moss, get stiff tests from Ravens defense at joint practices

The Vikings also went through two days of tough tests against the Ravens' defense under the direction of new coach Jesse Minter. Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey presented Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson plenty of challenges in a matchup of two-time All-Pros. BBO--Foul Ball Technology

Does baseball need even more technology for plays like Pete Alonso's disputed fly ball?

SUMMARY: Pete Alonso’s deep fly was ruled foul, and the call stood after a review in Baltimore’s 5-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. That led to plenty of outcry — and calls for baseball to use technology to evaluate possible home runs near the foul pole. It doesn’t sound like that is imminent. A person with knowledge of the issue said if baseball were to start using additional technology on fly balls like these, it would have to be developed, tested and installed by MLB. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.
