Justice Department pushes to revive criminal case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia
SUMMARY: The Justice Department is pushing to revive criminal charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia. In a filing with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on late Monday, prosecutors say U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw erred when he found the human smuggling charges were an “abuse of prosecuting power.” Abrego Garcia's successful challenge of his 2025 deportation to El Salvador was an embarrassment for the Trump administration. The government only returned him to the U.S. after they had secured a criminal indictment. Crenshaw found that both the timing of the charges and statements by top Justice Department officials suggested a prosecution tainted by animus toward the defendant.

Americans have elected only 3 Black governors. This year, 8 major party candidates are on the ballot
SUMMARY: Florida Republicans have settled on Byron Donalds, a congressman, as their candidate for governor, and that now makes eight Black major party nominees for governors this year. Maryland’s Wes Moore is the only Black governor now and he's seeking reelection in November. The Democrat is just the third elected Black governor in U.S. history. All have been Democrats and men. The November slate includes Democrats and Republicans, men and women. The nominees are promoting their experience and ideas for all constituents. But many say the possibility of expanded representation matters, given the nation’s history and the current environment surrounding issues of race and racism.

Trump picks Dr. Heidi Overton, a top White House aide, to lead the Food and Drug Administration
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has picked Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration. Overton is a deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and a trusted figure in Trump's administration. Overton has worked on several of Trump's health initiatives. But the new FDA commissioner will face challenges balancing Trump's priorities, traditional Republican interests and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s anti-corporate stance. Overton will need Senate confirmation and face questions from the Senate health committee. The previous FDA head, Dr. Marty Makary, resigned in May, leaving unfinished projects like work on ultra-processed foods, antidepressants and COVID-19 shots.

In Meta's trial, families of social media victims see a pivotal moment for online safety
SUMMARY: Advocates and parents of social media victims see the trial underway against Meta Platforms as a significant moment in their fight for online child safety. The trial involves attorneys general from four states seeking billions in damages for social media harms to children. This lawsuit is not focused on any individual person, case or specific harm tied to social media, but rather broader claims that Meta made decisions in designing Instagram and Facebook that put young users at risk. Meta has rejected the allegations and said the trial will show the work it has done to make its platforms safer.

Governors' races are being increasingly buffeted by the toxic politics of data centers
SUMMARY: More governors are shifting their stances or taking more steps to squeeze data centers, as the midterm elections near and public opinion sours on the energy-hungry behemoths. The backlash to the server warehouses is enveloping races for governor in some of the nation’s biggest states and presidential battlegrounds. On Tuesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said his administration would no longer put data center projects at the head of the line when it comes to issuing construction permits or granting tax exemptions if they don’t meet certain standards. Meanwhile in Texas, Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa released a TV ad in rural markets accusing Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of selling out residents to data center executives and companies.

Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell says football brings him joy amid family tragedy
SUMMARY: NFL veteran Calais Campbell knew he wanted to keep playing, even after a family tragedy this summer resulting in his mother’s death and his brother being charged with murder. The Baltimore Ravens signed the six-time Pro Bowler in April to a one-year deal. In late June, police found his 71-year-old mother dead at her home in Atlanta during a welfare check. Her 41-year-old son Ciarre Campbell was charged with murder after he was found with a knife, according to arrest warrants. In his first public remarks since then, Calais Campbell told reporters that playing football brings him joy, so it's been great for him.

Rugby’s fiercest rivalry resumes: Springboks play All Blacks in first 4-test series in 50 years
SUMMARY: Rugby titans South Africa and New Zealand have finally arrived at their long-awaited test series, the culmination of the first full-size tour between them in 30 years. Both teams just need an injury niggle or two to clear up before they run out on Saturday at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The odds favor the undisputed two-time world champion Springboks in their first four-test series with the No. 2-ranked All Blacks since 1976. As Springboks coach or director for eight years, Rassie Erasmus has an 8-6 record against New Zealand, with one draw. Dave Rennie has taken charge of the All Blacks only since June. Yankees' Bellinger nears rehab games and Boone hopes Fried setback is minor
SUMMARY: New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger could begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton on Thursday. Meanwhile, Yankees manager Aaron Boone hopes left-handed starter Max Fried’s second stint on the injured list will be brief. He said Tuesday he feels close to 100 percent and he believes he'll play in multiple rehab games. Fried is dealing with symptoms stemming from the same left elbow bone bruise that forced him to miss more than two months earlier this season. SUMMARY: Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker says Jacob deGrom checked out OK after a bullpen session and could start again a week after lasting just two innings against the Los Angeles Angels due to right triceps fatigue. SUMMARY: Baltimore Orioles reliever Félix Bautista and utility player Blaze Alexander could begin rehab assignments by the end of the week, according to the club’s weekly injury report. Bautista was an All-Star in 2023, when he had 33 saves and a 1.48 ERA. That September, he suffered an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. Players share their thoughts on where the PGA Tour postseason should go

In other news, Scottie Scheffler is on the cusp of replacing Tiger Woods atop the PGA Tour career earnings list. Woods has been there since 2000. SUMMARY: Najee Harris has not played football in nearly a year since going down with a torn left Achilles tendon. Still, the veteran running back does not think it will take long to get into playing shape after signing with the New York Giants. SUMMARY: The Jacksonville Jaguars are acquiring guard Daniel Faalele from the New York Giants for a 6th-round draft pick in 2027, according to a person with knowledge of the trade. Jacksonville gets much-needed help on the offensive line with projected starter Patrick Mekari out because of injuries and several others banged up. Formula for extending the careers of NFL linemen? Less practice, maximum care
SUMMARY: Patriots right tackle Morgan Moses was the old man on New England’s offensive line last season at 34 years old. But it didn’t stop him from starting all 21 games his team played during its Super Bowl run. A big reason is the Patriots meticulously crafted a program for him that featured less practice and lots of off-field treatment to preserve him for games. Because they take fewer hits, quarterbacks and kickers have regularly played into their late 30s and early 40s, most notably Tom Brady and George Blanda. But with Moses back at 35 and Aaron Donald flirting with coming out of retirement at the same age and with increasing advances in sports technology, could 35 be the new 30 for NFL linemen if it’s managed properly?
