The men behind Trump's $3.47 gas: An NFL coach, a GOP fundraiser and two New Jersey brothers
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump and his White House have enthusiastically promoted the Freedom Fuel Network, a chain of star-spangled gas stations. Untangling exactly who is behind the venture from public records has proven difficult. Records lead to a group of New Jersey businessmen that include an NFL kicking coach, a GOP fundraiser and a pair of brothers who were ordered by a judge earlier this year to pay civil damages for unlawfully taking more than 200,000 gallons of fuel. And none of them want to talk about it.

SUMMARY: Baltimore Orioles All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman missed Sunday’s 4-2 win over the Houston Astros with left wrist discomfort, and his replacement, Samuel Basallo, left in the second inning because of right shoulder discomfort. Manager Craig Albernaz did not disclose how Rutschman injured his wrist or how long he might be out, only that he wanted to avoid playing him on Sunday. Sam Huff, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, replaced Basallo behind the plate.

Ex-Olympian charged with damaging Reflecting Pool gets Sept. 28 trial date
SUMMARY: A judge in the nation’s capital has set a September trial date for a former Olympic canoe racer charged with deliberately damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. D.C. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman scheduled a Sept. 28 trial for David Hearn during a hearing Monday. A grand jury indicted Hearn on a felony count of property destruction. Hearn has pleaded not guilty. The case against the Bethesda, Maryland, resident stems from a troubled multimillion-dollar renovation project championed by President Donald Trump, a Republican who claims vandals have damaged the pool. Hearn and his supporters say his prosecution is a politically motivated attempt by the Trump administration to scapegoat him.

Shakira, Madonna and many Muppets take the World Cup stage, along with BTS and Bieber
SUMMARY: Madonna opened the World Cup halftime show with her 2000 dance-pop hit “Music,” joined by star Brazilian soccer players of yesteryear, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Sunday's show started with an apparently prerecorded piece in a roller rink before she rode into the stadium on a dune buggy. Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel led an orchestra through the White Stripes’ sporting anthem “Seven Nation Army,” while Animal and other Muppets bopped and shook. K-pop sensations BTS took to the field in red and black moments later singing “Dynamite.” There was also Justin Bieber, “Ted Lasso” characters and, of course, “Dai Dai.”

Argentina's Martinez plays cool in net, even as teammates turn reckless in historic World Cup final
SUMMARY: Emiliano Martinez was cool as could be in goal, even as impatience and frustration brewed among his fiery Argentine teammates. Playing with a broken finger, he broke a World Cup final record for saves. The star goalkeeper just couldn’t hold up after Argentina’s unyielding, ruthless aggression steered La Albiceleste into a red card and left them a man down in extra time. Spain’s Ferran Torres smashed the ball past Martínez for his first goal of the World Cup to make it 1-0 in the 106th minute, enough on Sunday to send the team past Lionel Messi and Argentina for its first title since 2010.

Trump celebrates the World Cup as a US victory as he presents trophy to the winner, Spain
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has presented the World Cup trophy to Spain, the winner of Sunday’s final against Argentina. But in his eyes, the real victor of the world's premier soccer tournament is the United States. From the start, this year's World Cup faced challenges and backlash, including over its migration policies and high ticket prices. Trump stirred controversy by intervening in a referee decision on a red card. Despite tensions with co-hosts Canada and Mexico, the event has largely been considered successful. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also attended the final, showing soccer’s ability to bridge geopolitical divides.

Simón says it was Spain's record defense that made the goalkeeper's job so easy in the World Cup
SUMMARY: After cruising through the World Cup barely allowing any goals, Spain won the final barely allowing a shot. Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday was its record seventh shutout of the World Cup. The Spaniards allowed just one goal and in the final permitted just two shots, neither of which was on net. Unai Simón won the Golden Glove as the tournament’s top goalkeeper. This squad allowed only Belgium to get on into the net in a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals, then blanked teams featuring Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, the two greatest scorers in World Cup history.

Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani won't pitch for 'some time' because of left knee irritation
SUMMARY: Shohei Ohtani won’t make his next scheduled start on the mound because of left knee irritation and isn’t expected back in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation for a while. The two-way superstar received a lubricant injection just before the All-Star break last week and had been expected to pitch Wednesday at Philadelphia. Ohtani, however, still didn’t feel 100% while playing catch this weekend, so he and the Dodgers decided not to even test the knee with a bullpen session. The four-time MVP hasn’t pitched since July 3, and it’s unclear when he'll return to the mound. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says Ohtani feels no pain in the knee when hitting.
