US--Food Aid Errors-What-to-Know

Dozens of states could face new costs because of high error rates in SNAP food aid

SUMMARY: Several dozen states might need to pay millions for food aid if they don't reduce errors in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But nine states with low error rates won't have to pay anything when the new cost-sharing requirements begin in October 2027. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released data Wednesday showing which states might owe money when cost-sharing start. States with high error rates face tough choices, like cutting other services or making it harder to stay in SNAP. Some states might even consider leaving the program. Advocates are urging Congress to delay these cost-sharing requirements.

US--Artificial Intelligence-Politics

AI is plowing through the workplace. This new group wants to help people adapt and have jobs

SUMMARY: A new bipartisan nonprofit wants to help Americans who find they're out of work because of AI. It's called RAISE US and it's starting with more than $500 million for education and training programs at the state level. An analysis by the Boston Consulting Group estimated that more than half of U.S. jobs will be reshaped by AI over the next few years. Former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb are the co-founders. They're planning to start with programs in Arkansas, Maryland, Utah and Connecticut. Raimondo says the states will test ideas that Congress can later embrace as policies.

US--Election 2026-Michigan Senate

AP Exclusive: Sen. Van Hollen backs El-Sayed for Michigan Senate in break from Democratic leadership

SUMMARY: Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen is endorsing Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. This breaks with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and deepens a party split in one of 2026’s most important races. Van Hollen shared the endorsement first with The Associated Press as early voting begins in Michigan. He says El-Sayed is the strongest candidate to win in November. The endorsement comes as progressives look to build on recent wins in New York. It also raises the stakes in Michigan, where Democrats must hold retiring Sen. Gary Peters’ seat to have a shot at retaking the Senate majority.

US says chemical maker Chemours to pay $450M to settle 'forever chemicals' case

SUMMARY: The Trump administration has reached a multi-state settlement with chemical giant Chemours Co. over years-long, illegal discharges of synthetic “forever chemicals” used to make products resistant to water, grease and stains. The settlement is the first by the federal government to resolve enforcement claims against a manufacturer of harmful chemicals known as PFAS. Under the agreement, Chemours will pay a civil penalty of $22.5 million for alleged violations and spend $90 million over 15 years to mitigate PFAS discharges in three states: West Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey. The company also agreed to install PFAS pollution controls and supply clean drinking water to affected communities. Combined, the penalties and relief programs are estimated to cost $450 million.

A member of the cultlike Zizians group is charged in the killings of her parents in Pennsylvania

SUMMARY: A Pennsylvania prosecutor says a member of the cultlike group known as Zizians has been charged in the 2022 killing of her parents, and authorities don't believe she acted alone. Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said Wednesday that 33-year-old Michelle Zajko faces murder, burglary and conspiracy charges. Rita and Richard Zajko were shot in their Chester Heights home on New Year’s Eve, Michelle's birthday. Rouse says if Zajko didn't pull the trigger, she arranged for it.
