Judge allows gun and notebook as evidence at Mangione’s trial in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing
SUMMARY: A gun and notebook that prosecutors say link Luigi Mangione to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson can be used as evidence at his murder trial. The judge's ruling Monday partially rejects a defense argument that those items were seized illegally, before a search warrant was obtained. It's a major win for prosecutors, enabling them to show the jury a possible murder weapon and evidence they say points to motive. But the judge also ruled that other evidence found during an initial search of Mangione’s backpack must be suppressed. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges.

Talks to end a strike shutting down the largest US commuter rail system will resume Monday
SUMMARY: The strike shutting down North America’s largest commuter rail system will continue into a third day. Lengthy negotiations failed to reach a deal in time to save Monday morning's commute on the Long Island Rail Road in New York. The talks that began Sunday afternoon went past 1 a.m. Monday before negotiators called it a night, agreeing to resume discussions six hours later. The failure to reach a deal means the strike will mar the start of the work week for about a quarter million commuters. The talks involved five unions representing about half the railroad's workforce and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the railroad. The strike started Saturday. The two sides have negotiated for years over a new contract.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Pennsylvania’s primaries
SUMMARY: Pennsylvania Democrats will pick nominees to unseat a trio of vulnerable Republican members of Congress in a state primary on Tuesday. The 1st, 7th and 10th Congressional Districts are among the top targets for Democrats as they eye winning back control of the closely divided chamber. GOP U.S. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mackenzie and Scott Perry are all unopposed in their reelection bids. Voters across the commonwealth will also decide primaries for lieutenant governor and for both chambers of the General Assembly. Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro and Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity are unopposed in their gubernatorial primaries.

SUMMARY: Denny Hamlin avoided trouble by starting from the pole for what turned out to be a caution-plagued event and outdueled Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe for his second victory in the NASCAR All-Star Race. Taylor's 3-run homer in 9th and Benge's bouncer in 10th rally Mets past Yankees 7-6 to take 2 of 3
SUMMARY: Tyrone Taylor tied the score with a three-run homer off All-Star closer David Bednar with two outs in the ninth inning, rookie Carson Benge hit a game-ending bouncer in the 10th and the New York Mets stunned the Yankees 7-6 to take two of three from their crosstown rival in their Subway Series at Citi Field. The Mets had lost 91 consecutive games when trailing after eight innings since Pete Alonso’s home run off Devin Williams led them to victory at Milwaukee in the 2024 NL Wild Card Series. Williams, now with the Mets, got Austin Wells to ground into an inning-inning double play in the 10th. While the Mets improved to 10-5 in May, the Yankees completed a 2-7 trip.

McIlroy has angry exchange with fan at PGA. Rahm, Smith, Schauffele also fade
SUMMARY: Rory McIlroy’s frustrating final round at the PGA Championship boiled over with an angry exchange with a fan after a “U-S-A!” shout from the gallery at Aronimink Golf Club. The costly errant shot out of heavy rough at the 16th hole derailed McIlroy’s come-from-behind bid Sunday, and he appeared to respond to the shout by using an expletive while telling the fan to “shut up.” The exchange summarized the two-time PGA and six-time major winner’s confounding final round. He was not alone, as Jon Rahm, Cam Smith and Xander Schauffele had their chances and failed to catch Aaron Rai.

New York will host 8 World Cup games, including the final, in New Jersey: Things to know
SUMMARY: New York will host eight matches throughout the World Cup at the stadium in the Meadowlands in northern New Jersey that belongs to the NFL's Jets and Giants. That includes the final on July 19. It's the latest big event for the venue a dozen years since the Super Bowl was played there. The high price tag of getting to and from the stadium has dominated the leadup to the World Cup, with round-trip trains between Manhattan and East Rutherford going for $98 a match and shuttles for $20. Fan zones will also be available in each of New York City's five boroughs and also in New Jersey.

With runner-up at PGA, Jon Rahm flashes a reminder that he's still among the world's best
SUMMARY: Jon Rahm had his best performance at a major championship since leaving the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. Rahm finished second to Aaron Rai at the PGA Championship at Aronimink. Although it goes in the books as a runner-up finish, Rahm was three strokes behind Rai and didn't have a chance to win over the closing holes. Still, it was a reminder of how well Rahm can play in a major. He's been toiling in relative obscurity to American audiences while playing for LIV Golf. Rahm has two wins on LIV this year but had a disappointing finish at the Masters.

Aaron Rai runs away with the PGA Championship, first English-born winner in more than a century
SUMMARY: Aaron Rai has become the first English-born player in more than a century to capture the PGA Championship. Rai, who dreamed of being a Formula 1 driver until he turned to golf, was three shots behind and approaching the turn at Aronimink Golf Club when he delivered a performance worthy of a major champion. He made a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 ninth during a stretch when he one-putted seven straight greens. Then he holed a birdie putt of some 70 feet across the 17th green for the clincher. The 31-year-old Rai is the first player of Indian heritage to win a major. He closed with a 5-under 65.

NBA tipoff: The conference finals start with Spurs-Thunder on Monday
SUMMARY: Merry Christmas! No, wait, these are the NBA conference finals. Easy mistake. If these games — San Antonio at Oklahoma City, and Cleveland at New York — make you want to put on sweaters, have some eggnog and unwrap gifts, there’s a reason. Those matchups were part of the NBA’s schedule on Dec. 25 this season. And now, they’re also the matchups for the conference finals. Oklahoma City and San Antonio will play in the Western Conference finals, that series beginning Monday on the Thunder’s home floor. And Cleveland will play New York in the Eastern Conference finals, starting Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

Aaron Rai leans on humble roots and hard work to become a major champion
SUMMARY: Aaron Rai recalls watching VHS tapes of Tiger Woods when he was a boy growing up in England. So it was incredible for him to see his name on the Wanamaker Trophy after his astonishing charge to win the PGA Championship. Rai played the final 10 holes in 6 under. The only player who did better than that to win a major was Jack Nicklaus in the 1986 Masters. Rai zoomed past some of golf's best players. He says everyone in golf has an amazing journey to become a major champion. But his stands out for humility and hard work.
