Trump administration to pay 2 more companies to walk away from US offshore wind leases
SUMMARY: The Trump administration has announced two more payouts for energy companies to walk away from U.S. offshore wind projects under development. Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind have agreed to end their offshore wind leases in exchange for reimbursements totaling nearly $900 million. Bluepoint Wind is an offshore wind project in early stages of development off the coasts of New Jersey and New York, while Golden State Wind is a floating offshore wind project proposed off California’s central coast. The Interior Department said Monday it’s following the model of its recent deal with the French energy company TotalEnergies, which is getting a $1 billion payout to walk away from projects off the coasts of North Carolina and New York.

Southern Poverty Law Center says its informant program was not kept secret from law enforcement
SUMMARY: The Southern Poverty Law Center has told a federal court that law enforcement agencies knew for years that the nonprofit was paying informants to report on the movements of hate groups. It was the group's first legal defense against Justice Department charges that the center was secretly steering money to extremist groups. In a motion filed in federal court in Alabama on Tuesday, the nonprofit said acting Attorney General Todd Blanche knew or should have known that he was making false claims when he said the government had “no information” about the informant program. The filing cites three instances in which law enforcement agencies acted on tips relayed through the program.

Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor is hospitalized with a stomach-related issue
SUMMARY: New York Giants Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor has been hospitalized for a stomach-related issue that a representative of his says doesn't appear to be life-threatening. Taylor spent his entire 13-season NFL career with the Giants from 1981-93 and helped them win the Super Bowl twice while being an eight-time AP All-Pro selection.

SUMMARY: New York City will hold a series of free events for soccer fans hoping to catch World Cup matches, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg on tickets. The events were announced Monday. Cooper Flagg edges former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel for NBA Rookie of the Year
SUMMARY: Dallas’ Cooper Flagg has edged former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel of Charlotte to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Flagg was the first rookie since Michael Jordan in 1984-85 to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists and steals. That and other accolades for a teenager were enough to overcome a difficult season for the Mavericks, while Knueppel helped the Hornets qualify for the play-in tournament. Flagg and Knueppel were first and second in rookie scoring. They were the first former college teammates to do that since UConn stars Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon in 2004-05.

The Penguins needed Sidney Crosby to do Sidney Crosby things against Philly. The captain delivered
SUMMARY: Sidney Crosby is finding his game, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are suddenly making it hard on the Philadelphia Flyers. Crosby shook off absorbing a puck to his left knee on a shot by teammate Ryan Shea to pick up two assists in Pittsburgh's 3-2 win in Game 5. The 38-year-old star earned the 100th playoff victory of his career and helped the Penguins win their second straight to fend off elimination. The Flyers are still up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, but the pressure will shift to Philadelphia for Game 6. Crosby says the Penguins are playing better hockey, but plenty of work remains to be done if they want to become just the fifth team to win a series after losing the first three games.

The mighty NL Central is the majors' only division with 5 winning teams
SUMMARY: The NL Central has reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes. It has some of the majors’ most promising rookies, like Sal Stewart, Konnor Griffin and JJ Wetherholt. It has young stars like Elly De La Cruz and older ones like Christian Yelich. Maybe this strong start from all five teams isn’t that big a surprise after all. The NL Central is the only division in baseball in which every team has a winning record. It’s the second-latest date in a season that every NL Central club has been over .500, according to Sportradar, trailing May 29, 2004, when the division had six teams and each one was 23-22 or better.

Phillies fire manager Rob Thomson after losing 11 of 12 games, name Don Mattingly interim skipper
SUMMARY: Manager Rob Thomson, who led the Phillies to four straight playoff appearances, has been fired after Philadelphia lost 11 of 12 games and began Tuesday tied for last place in the majors. Bench coach Don Mattingly was named interim manager through the end of the season. His son Preston is the Phillies general manager. Thomson went 355-270 and led a team loaded with high-priced talent that included Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner to consecutive division titles. The 62-year-old Thomson signed a contract extension in the offseason running through the 2027 season and was again expected to lead the Phillies into World Series contention.
