Justice Department files complaint against Washington and its sewage authority for massive spill
SUMMARY: The Justice Department has filed a complaint against Washington, D.C., and its water authority for a massive sewage leak into the Potomac River. The leak, from a deteriorating pipeline, spilled 244 million gallons of raw sewage. The pipeline collapsed on Jan. 19, causing sewage to flow into the river in Maryland. The complaint alleges DC Water failed to maintain the system properly. Emergency repairs have been completed, but full repairs could take months. The incident has led to political blame and a class action lawsuit. Washington and DC Water had no immediate comment.

A criminal sentence for OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma clears the way for completing its settlement
SUMMARY: A judge is expected to sentence OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma to forfeit $225 million to the U.S. government. The criminal sentence Tuesday will mark a major step toward the company finalizing a settlement of thousands of lawsuits it faces over the toll of opioids. The sentence is part of a 2020 deal to resolve federal criminal and civil probes. The broader settlement could become effective as soon as May 1, with the first payments rolling out to state, local and Native American tribal governments and some individual victims. Some people who lost loved ones to overdose are still pushing for criminal charges against the company's owners.

Mother and 6 children killed in explosion and fire at central Pennsylvania home
SUMMARY: Authorities say an Amish woman and her six children ranging in age from 3 to 11 were killed in an explosion and fast-moving fire at a rural Pennsylvania home. Pennsylvania State Police say firefighters responding in Clinton County on Sunday morning found that seven people were trapped, but they couldn't search the house engulfed in flames. All seven died. Police identified them as 34-year-old Sarah Stoltzfus, four sons and two daughters. The cause is under investigation. Police say a propane leak inside the home may have caused the explosion and fire. An obituary posted online by a local funeral home identified Stoltzfus as a member of the Old Order Amish Church community.

After facing the death of its dominant newspaper, Pittsburgh's media has a surprising turnaround
SUMMARY: Things looked bleak for media in Pittsburgh until a stunning turnaround. Weeks before the city's dominant newspaper was due to close, a sale has kept it alive. And an alternative newspaper that was suddenly shut down on New Year's Day has come back under new ownership. It's a relief for the community and a rare bit of good news for a local news industry that has seen little but the opposite over the past two decades. Now the hard work begins. But experts hope that some of the energy unleashed by journalists who had been facing painful losses can pull Pittsburgh through

Capitals say they'll have a contingency plan for whatever Ovechkin decides on his future
SUMMARY: Alex Ovechkin’s decision on whether to return for a 22nd season is the biggest loose end facing Washington general manager Chris Patrick and president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan as they look ahead to 2026-27. The Capitals have said repeatedly they aren’t going to pressure their 40-year-old captain or rush him, but they obviously have to think ahead and consider a lot of different scenarios. Patrick says the Capitals will support Ovechkin however his decision plays out.

CJ McCollum takes Young's place in Atlanta and as MSG's villain in leading Hawks past the Knicks
SUMMARY: CJ McCollum was headed for an early summer until the Washington Wizards sent him to the Hawks in January in the trade for Trae Young. McCollum not only replaced Young in Atlanta, now he’s replaced him in Madison Square Garden. McCollum was the villain who carried the Hawks past the New York Knicks in a playoff game. Giants have potential franchise-altering options with 5th and 10th picks in NFL draft
SUMMARY: The New York Giants could go in a lot of franchise-altering directions with the fifth pick in the NFL draft. They could get a potentially difference-making running back in Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love two years after letting Saquon Barkley leave in free agency. The NFL's increased use of tight ends could have an impact on how teams approach the draft
SUMMARY: The move by NFL offenses in recent years to counter nickel defenses by using more tight ends at the same time could have a big impact on the way some teams approach the upcoming draft. The multiple tight end formations that teams like Seattle, the Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears used with great success in 2025 to exploit smaller defenses will likely be adopted by more teams this year. That could put a premium on drafting the big versatile players who can contribute as both run blockers and pass catchers.

Counsell thinks an MLB rule that only affects Ohtani and the Dodgers is 'bizarre'
SUMMARY: Cubs manager Craig Counsell thinks a Major League Baseball rule that allows the Los Angeles Dodgers to carry 14 pitchers because of Shohei Ohtani is “bizarre.” Major league teams are allowed to have a maximum of 13 pitchers on their active 26-man roster from opening day through Aug. 31. From Sept. 1 through the end of the season, the roster limits increase to 14 pitchers and 28 active players. But Ohtani is designated as a two-way player, which means he doesn’t count as a pitcher. So the reigning World Series champions have a total of 14 pitchers on their active roster. Counsell says, “There’s not another player like that, but one team gets different rules for that player."
