Man once married to Jill Biden held without bail after being charged in wife’s killing
SUMMARY: Authorities say a Delaware man who was once married to former first lady Jill Biden remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in the death of his wife. William Stevenson, 77, was charged in a grand jury indictment with killing Linda Stevenson, 64, who was found unresponsive in their Wilmington home on Dec. 28 after police responded to a reported domestic dispute. Stevenson has failed to post $500,000 bail and remains in custody. Investigators have not disclosed a motive or identified a defense attorney. Jill Biden declined to comment through a spokesperson.

Trump taking steps toward installing a Columbus statue near the White House
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is taking steps toward installing a statue of Christopher Columbus near the White House. The statue, previously tossed into Baltimore's harbor during protests, is owned by the Italian American Organizations United. The group signed an agreement Wednesday to loan it to the federal government. Maryland lobbyist John Pica confirmed the plan, noting the statue's restoration. Trump’s spokesman declined to comment on plans for the statue but called Columbus a hero. The statue is a replicae of one that was toppled in 2020 amid protests against racism and pulled from Baltimore's harbor. Trump dismisses criticism of Columbus, aiming to reshape historical narratives as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.

The detention of New Jersey kebab shop owners sparked change. Deportation still looms
SUMMARY: The detention of a Turkish couple who own a New Jersey kebab shop helped galvanize their community against immigration crackdowns last year. The menu includes shawarma and baklava, but customers also go to the restaurant near Philadelphia for a side of protest of the Trump administration's immigration policies. Their business has become more popular and moved into a bigger space. Like before, they continue to offer free food to those who need help. But for Celal and Emine Emanet, the possibility of deportation still looms.

Emergency crews evacuate patients and battle blaze at Pennsylvania hospital
SUMMARY: Emergency crews battled a blaze and evacuated patients from a northeastern Pennsylvania hospital after a fire broke out. Authorities say no one was injured in Wednesday night's fire at the Lehigh Valley Hospital campus in Dickson City. Fire officials say it started on the roof of an older building formerly known as Scranton Orthopedics, not inside the attached main hospital building. Smoke and water damage were reported. They say more than 70 patients were transported to hospitals and care facilities across the region, and all available EMS services within a 50-mile radius were used during the evacuation.

The Washington Post's sports section was a gold standard, all the way to the end
SUMMARY: The Washington Post has eliminated its sports section while laying off a third of its staff. For decades, the Post treated sports as a vital part of life in the District of Columbia, and some of the biggest names in sports writing either got their start at the Post or spent decades there. Before they became TV stars on “Pardon The Interruption” at ESPN, Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser were D.C. institutions at the Post. Christine Brennan and Sally Jenkins received career achievement awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors. And in recent years, reporting by the Post contributed to the downfall of Commanders owner Dan Snyder.

Last weekend's loss was just the latest blowout in a miserable season for Maryland
SUMMARY: Buzz Williams’ first season at Maryland is producing the wrong kind of history. The most recent low point came last weekend, when Purdue came to College Park on a three-game losing streak and left feeling good about itself again, having clobbered the Terrapins 93-63. That was Maryland’s most lopsided home loss since it began playing at XFINITY Center in 2002. It was also a slight improvement on the Terps’ previous outing, which was a 91-48 defeat at Michigan State that was the program’s most lopsided anywhere since 1944.

College football’s February signing period is quiet for most schools. Penn State is an exception
SUMMARY: College football’s February signing period is pretty much an afterthought for most schools nowadays. But it meant plenty to new Penn State coach Matt Campbell. Penn State signed only two high school recruits during the December signing period because the Nittany Lions hadn’t yet hired Campbell away from Iowa State. That left Campbell quite busy trying to put together a freshman class while also working the transfer portal and hiring his staff. Penn State now has an incoming freshman class of 15 recruits. Most of them originally signed with Iowa State before following Campbell to his new school.
