US--MLK Day-Federal Holiday

The US political climate spurs efforts to reclaim the MLK holiday

SUMMARY: Communities across the U.S. held parades, panels and service projects for the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But the current political climate left some feeling more fraught than festive when it came to how to honor the slain civil rights icon. In the year since Donald Trump’s second inauguration fell on the MLK holiday, the Republican president has gone after diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and targeted mostly Black-led cities for federal law enforcement takeovers. Speaking at King's home church in Atlanta, U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock urged the crowd to keep pushing against Trump’s policies, including sweeping immigration enforcement.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill sworn in as New Jersey's 57th governor

SUMMARY: Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been inaugurated as New Jersey's 57th governor. The four-term congresswoman and former Navy helicopter pilot is just the second woman to lead the state of nearly 9.5 million people and is the first person from a major political party to be elected to a third straight term in more than six decades, succeeding two-term Democrat Phil Murphy. She swept to victory over her Donald Trump-endorsed GOP rival in part by pinning blame for high costs on the president’s tariffs.

100 vehicles pile up in Michigan crash as snowstorm moves across the country

SUMMARY: More than 100 vehicles smashed into each other or slid off the interstate in Michigan as snow fueled by the Great Lakes blanketed the state. The massive pileup Monday prompted the Michigan State Police to close both directions of Interstate 196 just southwest of Grand Rapids. The State Police say there were numerous injuries but no deaths reported. The crash is just the latest impact of the major winter storm moving across the country. The National Weather Service issued warnings about either extremely cold temperatures or the potential for winter storms across several states.
