US overdose deaths fell through most of 2025, federal data reveals
SUMMARY: U.S. overdose deaths fell through the most of last year, suggesting a lasting improvement in an epidemic that had been worsening for decades. Overdose deaths have been falling for more than two years now in the most extended drop in decades, the new data indicates. However, the decline also shows signs of leveling off a bit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted the data Wednesday. It shows that an estimated 73,000 people died from overdoses in the 12-month period that ended August 2025, down about 21% from the previous 12-month period. Experts are cautiously optimistic the trend will last.

FBI searches a Washington Post reporter's home as part of a classified documents investigation
SUMMARY: Attorney General Pam Bondi says the search of a Washington Post reporter’s home was done at the Pentagon’s request as part of a leak investigation. The Post says journalist Hannah Natanson had a phone, two laptops and a watch seized by agents at her Virginia home. An FBI affidavit says the search was related to an investigation into a system administrator in Maryland who authorities believe took home classified reports. Natanson covers the Trump administration’s transformation of the federal government. A colleague has called her “the federal government whisperer.” The White House says leaking classified information puts America’s national security at risk.

Maryland Democratic Gov. Wes Moore pushes the case for redrawing the state's congressional map
SUMMARY: Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says he wants to move forward with redrawing the state’s congressional map. In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, the Democratic governor said he wants to see the Democratic-controlled legislature vote on the recommendations of a commission that has been reviewing new maps, despite opposition from a key fellow Democrat concerned that mid-decade redistricting could backfire and cost a seat instead of gain one. Moore says believes the General Assembly has not just the authority, but the responsibility to vote on the recommendations of the commission. Maryland Democrats already hold a 7-1 edge over Republicans in the U.S. House.

Trump's freeze of an offshore wind project faces scrutiny from a judge he appointed
SUMMARY: A federal judge is considering whether to set aside a Trump administration order pausing the construction of a major offshore project for New York. Norwegian developer Equinor had a hearing Wednesday in a lawsuit to overturn the Trump administration's freeze on the company's Empire Wind project. Equinor said it will likely have to kill the partially-finished project if construction can’t resume soon. The administration froze five big offshore wind projects on the East Coast days before Christmas, citing national security concerns. Developers and states sued to fight the administration’s order. The judge plans to issue his decision Thursday.

Proposals targeting immigration flood in following ICE shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis
SUMMARY: Democrats across the country are proposing state law changes to rein in federal immigration officers and protect the public following the shooting death of a protester in Minneapolis and the wounding of two people in Portland, Oregon. Many of the measures have been proposed in some form for years in Democratic-led states, but their momentum is growing as legislatures return to work amid President Donald Trump’s national immigration crackdown following the killing of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis. Republicans are pushing back, blaming protesters for impeding enforcement of immigration laws.

Democrats say Trump administration is investigating them over video message to troops
SUMMARY: Democratic lawmakers who appeared in a video urging members of the military to resist “illegal orders” have confirmed that they're under investigation from the Trump administration. It's a remarkable step by the Justice Department that comes after President Donald Trump accused the four House members and two senators of sedition for their words. The lawmakers all previously served in the military or at intelligence agencies. The FBI contacted them for interviews late last year, after their 90-second video was released, and now say they have been contacted by the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia, in a significant escalation in the investigation.

Court ruling jeopardizes freedom for pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil
SUMMARY: A federal appeals panel has reversed a lower court decision that released former Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil from an immigration jail, bringing the government one step closer to detaining and ultimately deporting the Palestinian activist. A three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia instructed the lower court on Thursday to dismiss Khalil’s habeas petition, a court filing that secured his release. The panel ruled that the federal district court in New Jersey did not have jurisdiction over the matter because immigration challenges are handled differently under the law.

Nationals.TV will make the club’s games available locally via cable and satellite and the MLB streaming platform. This move comes nearly a year after Major League Baseball said Washington would be freed from its longtime deal with the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network following the 2025 season. Surprised but not shocked, the Steelers prepare for life after Mike Tomlin
SUMMARY: Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II says he wasn't shocked by coach Mike Tomlin's decision to step down after 19 seasons. Rooney described Tomlin's choice as more “family-related” than “football-related.” Tomlin's departure means the Steelers are searching for just their fourth head coach since 1969. Rooney declined to get into specifics about what the team might be looking for, though each of Pittsburgh's past three coaches arrived as relative unknowns before taking the Steelers to the Super Bowl multiple times. Is Joel Embiid really back to All-Star form? 76ers proceed carefully as he avoids injury bug
SUMMARY: Joel Embiid is making a comeback with the 76ers, playing consistently without minutes restrictions for the first time since his MVP season in 2022-23. On Thursday, Embiid made a daring play to save a loose ball against Cleveland, diving over courtside seats. Despite past injuries, he's back to dominating on offense, scoring 20-plus points in his last 12 games. The 76ers, with Embiid and Paul George back in form, have surprised critics this season. Coach Nick Nurse believes Embiid is returning to his best, which is crucial for the team's success.

Former NCAA players and fixers charged over rigged basketball games, prosecutors say
SUMMARY: Federal prosecutors are charging 26 people, including former college basketball players who allegedly tried to fix games as recently as last season, in what they call a scheme to rig NCAA and Chinese Basketball Association games. Of the defendants named in Thursday’s indictment, 15 played basketball for Division 1 NCAA schools as recently as the 2024-25 season. Five others were described by authorities as fixers. The charges, filed in federal court in Philadelphia, include wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy. Authorities say the fixers recruited the college basketball players with “bribe payments” usually ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 per game. The indictment follows NCAA investigations that led to at least 10 players receiving lifetime bans.
