Lifelong drugs for autoimmune diseases don't work well. Now scientists are trying something new
SUMMARY: There's a new frontier in treating autoimmune diseases. Today's treatments tamp down the friendly fire but don't fix what's causing it. Now in dozens of studies, scientists are testing ways to reprogram patients' out-of-whack immune systems, including with a cancer treatment called CAR-T therapy. The new approaches are highly experimental and largely restricted to patients out of other options. But early results are raising hope as some people with lupus and other hard-to-treat illnesses have gone into drug-free remission.

Trump urged GOP-led states to redraw US House districts. Now other states also are gerrymandering
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has called for Republican states to redraw their U.S. House districts ahead of next year's elections. Now a growing number of both Republican and Democratic states are entering the battle to gerrymander voting maps. Republican officials in Texas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio all have adopted new congressional districts that could help Republicans win more seats. Meanwhile, California voters have adopted new districts that could help Democrats win more seats. And a Utah judge has imposed a new congressional map that could allow Democrats to win a seat. Nationally, Democrats need to gain just three seats to take control of the House.

Opioid settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue and Sackler family could end years of legal battles
SUMMARY: A bankruptcy judge is hearing closing arguments from the company that makes OxyContin, members of the Sackler family who own it and many groups that sued over its role in the opioid crisis. They're asking the judge to approve a settlement plan. Some individuals are objecting, but opposition has been mostly subdued. Members of the wealthy Sackler family will collectively pay up to $7 billion under the deal. State and local governments will receive most of it to address addiction. Victims who can prove they were prescribed the powerful painkiller will get several thousand dollars each. If the bankruptcy judge approves it, this could end years of legal battles.

A judge said Luigi Mangione could have a laptop to view evidence in jail. He still hasn't gotten it
SUMMARY: Months after a judge said Luigi Mangione could have a laptop in jail to review evidence, lawyers for the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson say the device has yet to be delivered. The delay, Mangione’s lawyers said in a court filing made public Thursday, is putting the 27-year-old suspect in a time crunch with little more than two weeks before an important hearing in his state murder case. Mangione, who is also facing a federal death penalty case, has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal jail in Brooklyn, since his arrest last December. He has pleaded not guilty.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman hospitalized after fall, his office says
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. John Fetterman had what his office says was a “ventricular fibrillation flare-up” that caused him to feel light-headed and fall during an early morning walk. His office says Fetterman was doing well Thursday and hospitalized in Pittsburgh. He sustained minor injuries to his face and was under “routine observation” at the hospital while doctors fine-tune his medication regimen. The American Heart Association says ventricular fibrillation is the most serious form of abnormal heartbeat and can lead to cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly stops beating. Fetterman suffered a stroke in 2022 and disclosed afterward that he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and another type of abnormal heartbeat, atrial fibrillation.

Starbucks workers kick off 65-store US strike on company's busy Red Cup Day
SUMMARY: More than 1,000 unionized Starbucks workers are on strike Thursday at 65 U.S. stores. The strike has closed some stores on Starbucks’ Red Cup Day, which is typically one of the company’s busiest days of the year. Starbucks gives away free, reusable cups to customers who buy a holiday drink. The union organizing Starbucks baristas says the striking workers are protesting a lack of progress in labor negotiations with the company. Starbucks Workers United says the walkout will impact stores in 45 cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Dallas. Starbucks says fewer than 4% of its U.S. stores are unionized and sales were exceeding its expectations Thursday morning.

Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees hopes to help QB Dillon Gabriel become more accurate
SUMMARY: Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is hoping to help rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel improve his accuracy. Rees took over as the Browns' play-caller in last week's loss to the New York Jets. Gabriel has a completion rate of 58.6%, which is second-worst among qualifying quarterbacks this season. Rees says there could be several reasons for Gabriel's struggles with accuracy. Last season at Oregon, Gabriel completed 72.9% of his passes, ranking third in the Football Bowl Subdivision. But he's facing a much more frequent and effective pass rush in the NFL. The Browns host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
