Obit-Assata Shakur

Assata Shakur, a fugitive Black militant sought by the US since 1979, dies in Cuba

SUMMARY: Assata Shakur, a Black liberation activist who was given political asylum in Cuba after her 1979 escape from a U.S. prison where she had been serving a life sentence for killing a police officer, has died. The Cuban government said Friday that Shakur died Thursday in Havana due to “health conditions and advanced age.” Shakur’s case had long been a thorny issue in the fraught relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Shakur was convicted in the 1973 death of Trooper Werner Foerster during a gunfight after a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. She was sentenced to life in prison but escaped and eventually fled to Cuba.

CA--Regulating Data Centers

California Legislature passes two watered-down bills to regulate data center water use, energy costs

SUMMARY: California lawmakers started the year saying they were ready to get tough on data centers, aiming to protect the environment and electric ratepayers. But the two bills that passed are weakened versions. Gov. Gavin Newsom is considering a bill that mandates data centers disclose their water use, but that information may not be made public. The other initially sought to protect energy customers from shouldering infrastructure costs driven by data centers. However, it now just lets regulators figure out if that is happening. The increase in the number of data centers means more water is being used to cool them along with more power plants and transmission lines being built to serve them.

US--Elections-Justice Department

US Justice Department sues 6 more states, including NY and California, in its quest for voter data

SUMMARY: The U.S. Justice Department is suing six more states, saying the states refused to turn over their voter registration lists. The lawsuits filed Thursday also accuse the states of failing to respond sufficiently to questions about how they maintain voter rolls. The department’s newest lawsuits targeted California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania after it sued Oregon and Maine last week. States called the department’s request for voters’ personal information intrusive, unprecedented and illegal, and vowed to fight it. The department says it's mounting a nationwide effort to ensure that states are complying with federal requirements to maintain voter rolls. The federal government doesn’t run elections.

Beavers' 9th-inning homer gives Orioles 6-5 win, assures Rays 2nd straight losing season

SUMMARY: Dylan Beavers homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in their home finale. The Orioles — who would have been assured of a last-place finish in the AL East with a loss — rallied from a 5-2, eighth-inning deficit and guaranteed the Rays consecutive losing seasons for first time since four straight from 2014-17. Coby Mayo tied it with a two-run homer in the eighth. Keegan Akin worked the ninth. Kevin Kelly allowed the homers to Mayo and Beavers, each on the first pitch of the at-bat.

In a disappointing year, the Orioles finished up their home schedule on a high note

SUMMARY: Rookie Dylan Beavers hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. BBO--AL East Race

AL East race between Yankees and Blue Jays comes down to final weekend of season

SUMMARY: The race for first place in the AL East is even with three games to go. That means the division title will be determined this weekend by how the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees handle a pair of also-rans. After both teams won at home Thursday night, the Yankees and Blue Jays remain tied for the top spot — and the best record in the American League — at 91-68. New York hosts last-place Baltimore for three games beginning Friday night, while Toronto welcomes fourth-place Tampa Bay north of the border. The Yankees and Blue Jays are both headed to the playoffs regardless of their results over the next three days, but the division winner gets a first-round bye.

Jets and Dolphins meet on Monday night, each looking to avoid 0-4 start

SUMMARY: The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets are both winless heading into Monday night's AFC East matchup, with both teams vying to avoid 0-4 starts. Tua Tagovailoa is 6-0 in his career against the Jets as Miami's starter but has been inconsistent in the first three games of the season. FBN--Jets-Glenn's Sideline Dance

Aaron Glenn's viral dance moves sparked mixed reactions, but Jets coach says he'll always be himself

SUMMARY: Aaron Glenn's dance moves on the sideline have made him a viral sensation on social media. The New York Jets coach celebrated a blocked field goal and touchdown with an impromptu dance during Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Despite the Jets losing 29-27, Glenn's dance gained attention when ESPN's Jenna Laine synchronized it to Earth, Wind & Fire's "September." Her tweet has since garnered 2.6 million views. SUMMARY: Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain sustained a UCL tear in his right thumb during a workout. The team and McCain are consulting physicians to decide on treatment. SUMMARY: Giancarlo Stanton grounded a go-ahead, three-run double and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 to remain tied with Toronto atop the AL East going into the final three games of the regular season. Carlos Rodón pitched six steady innings for his 18th win and Austin Wells added an RBI double off the right-center fence in the seventh as the playoff-bound Yankees finished a three-game sweep to move a season-high 23 games above .500. Umpires take away Tyler Gilbert’s glove after White Sox reliever gets checked for sticky stuff

SUMMARY: Tyler Gilbert’s glove was taken away by umpires who found it too sticky when the Chicago White Sox reliever entered Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees. Second base umpire Phil Cuzzi performed a routine inspection for illegal substances before Gilbert reached the pitcher’s mound. BBO--AL MVP Race

Cal Raleigh makes history, but will the catcher's 60 homers be enough to beat Aaron Judge for MVP?

SUMMARY: Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh has hit 60 home runs this season, joining an elite group in baseball history. He and Aaron Judge are the frontrunners for the American League MVP award. As of Thursday night, Raleigh was a slight favorite according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Judge, however, leads in advanced stats like wins above replacement. No catcher — and no switch-hitter — has ever hit as many homers as Raleigh in a season. In that sense, he’s had a more historic year than Judge. Now it’s up to the voters to decide if it was more valuable.

US--Jock Tax-Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's 'jock tax' on visiting athletes, performers at publicly funded stadiums shot down

SUMMARY: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that Pittsburgh’s so-called jock tax discriminates against visiting professional athletes and performers. The city has been charging them a 3% tax for income earned at publicly funded stadiums, while charging resident athletes 1% plus a 2 % school tax. The city says the net effect is the same, but the high court disagreed Thursday. The court notes that state lawmakers authorized the tax in the early 2000s to boost city finances, not to help pay for the stadiums. The city had collected about $2.6 million from the tax so far this year.
